Egypt is a land of vast desertscapes punctuated by pyramids and ornate tombs, the great Nile River running through it like a shimmering ribbon of blue. Most activities and experiences are outdoors and the heat is probably your biggest factor when deciding the best time to visit Egypt. If you’re unsure, read on for our hints and tips, whether you’re dreaming of a cruise down the Nile, visiting as many temples as possible, or dipping your toes in the Red Sea.
November to April
This is officially winter in Egypt, but in North Africa, that simply means balmy (blissful!) temperatures and a lovely time of year for sightseeing. It’s an ideal time to visit most destinations in the country and a great time to take in the sights of Cairo, Luxor and Aswan. Notoriously hot, winter in all three destinations is much more manageable and you can marvel at the Pyramids of Giza and the tombs in the Valley of the Kings, ride camel-back through the desert, and wander through the streets without worrying about the heat.
Siwa and the Western Desert in November are also a good bet as temperatures don’t fluctuate as dramatically. This makes it a great time of year for hiking Mount Sinai and the rolling dunes, or visiting the springs and salt lakes for a good soak. Although, pack warmly for the chilly evenings!
Winter is definitely the favourite season to visit Egypt and thousands of others agree, so it’s best to book as early as possible – and expect company at major sights. However, look out for the Khamsin Wind, which usually arrives between April and May, bringing sand clouds from the deserts that can affect sightseeing.
May to October
The peak summer months of July and August are, by and large, scorching hot across the country. The one exception is a cruise along the Nile, however, and with its cooling breeze, floating on the water is sublime. If you’re heading out to see the highlights of Luxor and Aswan, make sure to leave early as possible when the day hasn’t reached peak heat. Although humid, Alexandria also enjoys the sea air, which makes it a pleasant time to do a little wandering along the Corniche – but many Cairo residents may have the same idea.
Diving in the Red Sea is amazing all year long, but June and September are top contenders and the waters are calm, clear and temperate. You’ll also avoid the school holiday and winter sun crowds, making this the perfect time of year to have a stretch of beach all to yourself. As a bonus, you’ll avoid any rainfall the coast does receive, which mostly occurs between December and March.
One last thought
Travelling during the in-between months of March to May and September to early October means fewer travellers, fairly temperate days and beautiful scenery.
