Annie’s Spectacular South Luangwa Safari

The stuff of your safari dreams

In October 2024, one of our Africa travel specialists, Annie Irankunda, spent a week in heaven – or as the world knows it, Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park. From world-class safari camps to wildlife sightings that defy belief, the week held life-long memories for Annie.

One of the many leopards Annie spotted, sound asleep in a tree

Annie’s safari was filled with incredible animal encounters, beginning with the South Luangwa’s iconic leopards, which really showed off. Whether they were snoozing in trees, lapping at the water’s edge in the dark of night or the tiniest leopard cubs scampering along, each sighting was mesmerising and special.

A heart-wrenching scene of lions after a kill

Described by Annie as the most fascinating and saddest scenes she’d ever witnessed, the group watched as four lions took on a buffalo. It took them one and a half hours to bring down the impressive beast, the young lions proving their strength as the buffalo heaved its last breath.

The early morning views from Shawa Luangwa Camp

In the middle of her safari, Annie stayed at Shawa Luangwa Camp, which sits amongst the trees on the eastern banks of the Luangwa River. The tents can open up entirely on three sides, providing the ultimate view of the landscape at sunrise – complete with piping hot coffee and cookies.

A rare and hard-won sighting: the honey badger

A highlight of Annie’s was the night drives, which were all led by superb guides (a highlight all on their own!), adding another dimension to the thrill of a safari. They were lucky enough to see porcupine, serval and a honey badger, one of the most elusive of safari sightings.

An elephant trudging through the golden grasses

Annie felt closer to nature than ever before whilst sleeping under the stars in a fly tent. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of hearing hippos splashing in the water or elephants munching right next to you. According to Annie, she could never tire of seeing elephants and there was plenty of opportunity to spot these majestic creatures on walking safaris!

A chilled out moment for Annie at Time + Tide Kakuli Bush Camp

The clinking of sundowners marked the end of every day, which is especially magical whilst gazing over the water in the South Luangwa. Exchanging unique stories with the guides and fellow guests was a moment Annie looked forward to each day.
