Off the beaten track in Northern Laos

Dubbed Laos' 'capital village', Vientiane is anything but a rip-roaring city. Get to know its charming atmosphere on a walk amongst restored palaces, boutiques and cafes where you can enjoy a little people-watching in the sunshine. When hunger strikes, head to the nearest stall or market for a taste of the famous Sin Dat BBQ. Delve into Vientiane's history at the National Museum, the Arc de Triomphe and striking temples including Wat Si Saket - one of the most sacred in Laos and home to thousands of Buddha statues.

Seated beside the rambling Nam Ou River and abutted by sky-high mountains, Nong Khiaw is the kind of place where time spent inside is time wasted. Hop on a bicycle to meander through tiny villages, float down river on a bamboo raft or explore the route of your choice, hiking through caves, past cascading waterfalls or summiting Phadeng Peak for the ultimate view.

Seclusion and serenity awaits in Muang La, which is surrounded by nothing but lush hills and rice paddies for miles. Take your time exploring the countryside on foot or two wheels - perhaps stopping to visit one of the ancient hill communities, float down river on a traditional bamboo raft, and join the local people for an evening soak at the hot springs.

As Laos' erstwhile royal capital, Luang Prabang has an epic, 1,500-year-long history and its streets are dotted with intriguing architecture and dozens of gilded wats. Wake before dawn to witness the ancient and humbling ritual as monks collect their daily alms. As is the case with most of Laos, nature is never far away. Let the fresh air fill your lungs on treks or bicycle rides into the mountains and forests, idyllic kayaking trips along the Nam Ou River or a full-blown cruise down the Mekong, or swim in the turquoise pools of Kuang Si Waterfall.
