It might be the height of luxurious, but River Lodge is uber-relaxed, natural and the guides and staff will make you feel instantly at home.
The Sand River is a magnet for four-legged creatures - so much so that sometimes the best game viewing can be done from your very own private veranda...
The rooms at River Lodge are modern, minimal and chic. If you're looking for traditional Persian rugs, flickering lanterns and a classic safari-style, try the original Dulini Lodge instead.
The central communal areas are built towards the top of the Sands River embankment, in the shade of a cluster of ebony trees. The lounging and dining areas are very large, almost to the point of excess, with comfortable modern furniture upholstered in vibrant African patterns and colors. Dining takes place individually and communally, depending on request and location. The walls are decorated in traditional artwork and historic black and white images. One tier leads to the next, by way of stairs and then out onto the veranda overlooking the river. At the water's edge there is a platform for outdoor meals. Behind the central lodge there is a swimming pool and a boma (traditional outdoor enclosure) for star studded romance under an African sky.
Six well-appointed suites are evenly spread out along the Sands River on either side of the central lodge area. In keeping with the rest of the lodge, african colours and influences have been meshed with modern takes on safari decor. Well appointed with large beds, ceiling fans, air conditioning and heat, mini bars, writing desks and the en-suite experience offers a relaxing tub, indoor and outdoor showers complete with hot running water. Heading outside there is a private veranda with comforta chairs, loungers and a personal swimming pool.

Game drives, both day and night, is the primary activity on offer at Exeter River Camp. The impressive numbers of big game, specifically the Big Five, make game drive the most efficient method of exploration, covering the most ground and encountering the greatest variety of wildlife. Walking safaris offer a very different experience, focussing on total immersion into the wilderness, with a handful of more intense encounters. Bush walks do not target the larger species but rather insects, reptiles and birds often missed from the noisy vehicles. A massage at the lodge is a welcome treat for those wanting an extra bit of pampering. A short drive from the lodge, helicopter rides are on offer, showcasing the beauty of this land from above.
