The Eden is a living, breathing art gallery, which was transformed from the family home of Nairobi fashion extraordinaire, Anna Trzebinski. Every space has been painstakingly designed by Anna, featuring collected antiques and pieces by her family of artists. There are vivid paintings by Anna's late husband, Tonio, bronze sculptures from her son, and unique ceramics hand-crafted by her daughter. All of this sits within four acres of delicious gardens, where you can enjoy a spot of bird-watching, and from The Deck, sip on locally-produced coffee or a cocktail over views of the lake and Giraffe Sanctuary forest. Eden is certainly a fitting name.
From $460 person/night
The Eden is hugely eco-focused! They have vetoed all single-use plastics, water is solar-heated, and only organic products made in Kenya are used, including milk from the Masai Mara, honey from the Samburu, and toiletries handmade near Mount Kenya.
Visit Anna's studio and shop with its array of local brands, then take a look at the family's personal library and impressive collection of African literature and artefacts.
Some PSAs: laptops and tablets aren't allowed at Eden, photography is requested to be discreet, and children under 12 aren't able to be accommodated.
Splashes of nature infiltrate the interiors from forest-green couches in front of the fire to the ostrich eggs that dangle like earrings above the bar. The design is a picture of the Trzebinski family's history and adventures, each room warm and inviting with honeyed woods, local patterns and bold decor - as well as the 200 works of art. The restaurant and bar is on The Deck and offers a set-menu prepared with organic ingredients, many picked from their own garden (lunch and dinner must be booked in advance).
The Eden offers a total of nine rooms, spread between the main house (named after her children: Lana, Tacha and Sta) and Tonio's studio. The rooms are richly decorated with colourful paintings, and wood or Lamu-style beds, and bright with large windows that let in plenty of light. The main house has the grandest suite, which also has a private veranda. There is a trio of stand-alone studio lofts too, while two more rooms overlook the gardens or forest and enjoy a shared lounge, bar and dining area.
The hotel sits within the Langata neighbourhood, meaning the elephant orphanage, giraffe sanctuary and fascinating Karen Blixen Museum are all within easy reach. Experience more of Nairobi on a stroll through the buzzing Maasai Market or a tour of local artists' studios, the explore the natural surroundings on guided forest walks, hikes into the Ngong Hills for amazing views over the Rift Valley, or visits to the caves where Mau Mau freedom fighters took refuge. If you fancy a little pampering, the Eden offers simple spa treatments.
Show all wildlife
A land of stark contrast, where a rolling wilderness meets the rising buildings of a growing city, proving that harmony can be achieved in a modern world. Explore and discover a diverse range of wildlife in the Nairobi National Park; species like zebra, warthog, giraffe, buffalo and lion are in abundance with Black rhino sightings almost a given. There are leopard and cheetah, but these shy creatures can be a little more difficult to spot. This birdlife does not disappoint either with more than 400 species present in the region.
