Hidden under the fever trees along the Tarangire River in northern Tanzania, Forest Chem Chem is an exclusive-use camp designed to help visitors reconnect with nature and the people who share their love of the natural world. This luxurious five-star camp is one of just two on a private, 16,000-hectare concession nestled between Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Park – and with only three tents, it simply couldn't be any more exclusive. Flanked by vital water sources, this is an important corridor for wildlife, and is one of the most game-rich areas in the country.
From $890 person/night
For exceptional sights, hop aboard a hot-air balloon and cruise slowly over herds of elephant, zebra and giraffe for a bird's-eye vantage. Then top it off with a champagne breakfast.
Start off the day with a scramble up a nearby kopje to watch the sunrise, and round it off with a sundowner on the shores of saline Lake Burunge, home to pretty pink flamingos from July to November.
From fever tree forests and savannas to huge lakes and barren salt pans, the landscapes are nothing short of spectacular.
Taking its hues from the surrounding fever trees, the camp makes extensive, but subtle, use of soft greens and yellows, tan and grays. The main tent has cushioned wicker chairs to one side, and a long natural-wood dining table with ostrich-egg candelabras. The canvas sides roll up to make for easy flow to the patio, where there's another picnic table beside a large open-air fire pit. Outside, several generously cushioned hanging beds beg you to take a breezy siesta.
There are three tents among the fever trees – two vintage doubles and a two-bedroom family tent, sleeping eight in total. All the tents can be made up as kings or twins. They're superbly comfortable and stylish, with no sign of the glitz evident at other five-star safari camps. Expect large carpets, desks and chairs, and wooden decks with more seating. En-suite bathrooms have indoor and outdoor showers, a dressing table and nice touches of wood and copper.
The freedom to do things at our own pace was a treat. We felt like we owned this extraordinary Tanzanian bush camp – albeit briefly.
This private concession (or Wildlife Management Area) permits visitors to take both night drives and foot safaris, creating a good diversity of activities. Day drives into Lake Manyara and Tarangire parks reveal a huge variety of habitats and wildlife – think giant baobabs, huge elephant and zebra herds, lion, cheetah, and plentiful birdlife. Hot-air ballooning is epic, but costly. And for children, Masai warriors will share their bush survival techniques – following animal tracks or using a bow and arrow.
Show all wildlife
Animals are plentiful in the Tarangire National Park, a landscape of famous upside down trees (baobabs), acacia woodlands, riverine forest and swamps. If you want to see elephants, this is the best place to go. Large herds roam the plains, among zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, tree climbing lions and the occasional leopard. A real treat is the birding, with more than 500 species recorded across the park. This is a true wildlife wonderland.
