The charm of Fun Island is no secret - it's all about spending as much time in the water as possible. A shard of greenery in the South Malé Atoll, the island is a springboard for water activities of every variety from the relaxed stand-up paddleboarding to epic wakeboarding across the endless blue sea. And it wouldn't be the Maldives without diving expeditions to search for everything from green sea turtles to tiny angelfish. Every moment at the island is spent in barefoot bliss, watching sunsets from the jetty and enjoying chilled out evenings listening to Maldivian tunes. Having a good time is simply part of the deal.
Fun Island Resort is just located 45 minutes from Male International Airport by speedboat.
From $90 person/night
There are boatloads of activities, pun intended! There's something to fit every kind of day whether you fancy a beachside game of volleyball or feeling the sea spray on your face from the bow of a trimaran.
Head out onto the pier after dinner to try and spot sharks, manta rays and fish that find their way into the shallows.
The resort doesn't have a pool but in the Maldives, the sea is the best place to swim.
The super casual Farivalhu Restaurant serves buffet-style meals in a large pavilion. Grab a drink at the large stone bar, which sits in its own gazebo on the sand, or stop by the coffee shop for an a la carte lunch or an ice cream to enjoy with a stroll along the beach. In a traditional little building, indulge in a spa treatment or two - Thai massage anyone? If you fancy spending some time out of the sun, enjoy a game of pool or table tennis.
After returning from a busy day, rinse off at the outdoor shower and plop down onto the cushioned bench on your patio. Smart but modest, each room has a large bed dressed in blue scatter cushions, a small lounge area and TV on a wide desk. The en-suite bathrooms are simple in style and come with a wood-panelled rain shower. Decorated in wooden dolphin motifs, the deluxe beach bungalows are larger than the standard beachfront rooms. Other amenities include air-con, a minibar and tea/coffee facilities.
Head out by boat to find one of the atoll's many diving sites including Kandooma Thila where grey reef sharks and spotted eagle rays glide through the water; and Guraidhoo Corner, a protected area with an abundance of marine life. Take your pick from water sports ranging from canoeing along hidden coves to windsurfing and tubing in the wake of a speedboat. The island also offers tours in a glass-bottomed boat, floating above massive coral formations as you keep your eyes peeled for a passing sea turtle.
