Named after the on-site pool where hippos wallow and waggle their ears, Hippo Hollow is a family-friendly lodge set along the great Sabie River. Surrounded by grassy lawns and lush, willowy trees, you will feel like you're in the middle of nowhere - but its true location just outside the small town of Hazyview. You'll have an endless choice of opportunities for exploring the Mpumalanga province's most scenic sights and wildlife hotspots, and the gate to Kruger National Park is just 10 minutes away. The lodge itself also offers a wealth of experiences including traditional meals and musical performances at the Shangaan River Club.

Watching hippos wander up onto the grass to graze from your veranda, completely undisturbed and at ease.
If you're celebrating, request a 'Bridge Dinner', and watch the kingfishers flit by and hippos emerging to munch on the grass as you enjoy your meal.
While wifi is offered throughout the property, the connection isn't the best in the rooms.
Every space at Hippo Hollow was built to showcase the beautiful surroundings including the main area, a thatched structure that opens onto a terrace overlooking the garden and river. The interiors are decorated with vases of tropical flowers and light, wooden furnishings. The restaurant serves à la carte and buffet meals including plenty local favourites, which you can enjoy alongside one of South Africa's award-winning wines or partake in signature sundowners like the Hippo Mudslide. In the heat of the day, follow the hippos lead and enjoy a dip in one of the swimming pools.
Hippo Hollow boasts a variety of accommodation options from rooms in the main building to chalets (either garden or river view). The former are more hotel-like in their design, while the chalets have a grounded, simple style with wooden decor and thatched roofs. The river chalets enjoy the best views of the Sabie from their private veranda and each have a loft area, making them suitable for four guests. The bathrooms are well-appointed with a double shower and each room includes tea/coffee facilities, a TV and air-con.
Hippo Hollow enjoys an exceptional location in terms of activities. Enjoy a road trip along the Panorama Route, marvelling at the Blyde River Canyon (one of the largest on Earth), the curious formations of Bourke's Luck Potholes and the 'Three Rondavels'. Or see it all from the seat of a helicopter... Then again, you could also spend the entire day in Kruger National Park, keeping your eyes peeled for the Big Five as well as cheetah, giraffe, sable antelope and African wild dogs.
