Hacienda Concepción sits deep in the heart of the Amazon, exactly where Inkaterra’s commitment to ecotourism and sustainability first began. Originally a cacao and rubber plantation in the 50s, fast-forward a couple of decades and you'll find this luxury haven amid 800-plus hectares of lush, juicy rainforest, complete with a natural oxbow lake. The location - between Tambopata National Reserve and the shores of the Madre de Dios river - makes this a unique spot and an ideal place to immerse yourself fully into the wonders of the Amazon.
From $220 person/night
The guides are truly one of the highlights here. They are an endless source of knowledge (ask them as many questions as you can!) and always up for a good laugh.
Electricity is suspended between 11pm - 4:30am so bring along a power bank to charge everything overnight. You won't want to miss out because of a flat battery!
Although the hotel is happy to host children, few of the excursions are suitable for little ones.
After a half-hour scenic boat ride from Puerto Maldonado, walk up the steps of the jetty and you'll be met by the sight of scented towels and a cool drink. Remote yet accessible, the lodge’s buildings are rustically elegant (it makes sense when you see it!) with beautiful palm-thatched roofs. The main building is spread over two floors, the dining room and bar on the ground and a scenic lounge upstairs. To top it all off, the food is delicious, the cocktails are refreshing, and the spa offers just the right dose of pampering.
There are 25 independent cabanas and five rooms, all with beguiling forest views. Surrounded by their own patch of garden, the cabanas are bigger and offer more privacy, while rooms are in an Amazon-style building - ideal for families or friend groups. All have twins or a large King bed, mosquito nets, cotton sheets and bathrobes, and plenty of hot water. There’s no aircon but ceiling fans are available to ward off the jungle steaminess, and rooms are airy with no glass windows and only nets.
Hacienda Concepción has set itineraries to help guests make the most of everything the rainforest has to offer. Activities include exploring the Concepción trail, twilight river outings, nocturnal rainforest or canopy walks, farm visits and cruises on nearby Lake Sandoval to search for wildlife. Expect to see monkeys, caiman, giant river otters, plenty of birds, and some pretty crazy insects. For an extra fee, visit a riverside clay lick to catch the feeding macaws or organise private drinks on the river. Back to back unforgettable experiences...
