About Isibindi Zulu Lodge

This lodge is closed until further notice

This rustic lodge within an eco-reserve in the heart of Zululand offers a unique opportunity to experience traditional Zulu accommodation in bee-hive shaped suites, perfectly designed for warmth in winter and coolness during sweltering summer months. Views stretch across rolling hills, rugged outcrops and open plains threaded with lush riverine forests, home to many species of smaller plains game and a rich birdlife, particularly raptors. Guided game drives, walks, and outdoor adventure activities are offered, plus the freedom to explore without a guide if you choose. Tours of the surrounding areas of interest are easily arranged.

The property

Rustic Zulu architecture features throughout Isibindi, with beehive-shaped thatch and stone rondavels setting the tone at the entrance. Beneath high intricately thatched ceilings, the roomy lounge with an open stone fireplace and cool smooth expanses of natural polished floor leads out onto a viewing deck and corner bar. An infinity pool overlooks the valley below, where game is often spotted. Meals are served on the outer deck; alternatively, guests are treated to a traditional boma dinner and Zulu dancing display.

The rooms

Six beehive suites are beautifully positioned within the indigenous gardens, offering comfort and seclusion in Zulu-inspired style typical of the surrounding villages. Depending on preferences, double or twin rooms can accommodate up to three people with an extra stretcher bed if required. All are en-suite, with baths or showers; some have both. Designed to be warm in winter and cool in summer, these charming suites have private viewing decks and just the right degree of comfort for a relaxing stay.

Night Drives

Aside from twice-daily game drives, guests may explore the network of tracks and trails on mountain bikes, or on foot. Wildlife is diverse, without the larger potentially dangerous species, so it's possible to walk without a guide if you wish. Isibindi is a birdwatcher's paradise, with some species found nowhere else. During summer, take a picnic down to the river and enjoy a refreshing swim. Other options include clay pigeon shooting, homestead visits and tours of the nearby historic battlefields.
