For a private slice of the pristine Zanzibari coastline, Matemwe Beach House is just the ticket. Situated on the quieter north-eastern coast of the island, the 3 roomed house is the perfect hideaway for groups and families and with the white sands of Matemwe Beach literally a stone’s throw away from the private swimming pool, the location couldn’t be better. Throw in panoramic views of the endless sapphire waters and Mnemba Atoll, fresh seafood delivered daily, a private butler and a healthy dose of sunshine and this is exclusive beach living at its finest.
From $260 person/night
Having a private space to call your own, right on the white sands of the glorious Matemwe Beach, with activities and facilities on tap.
If you’re travelling with kids, they will love playing football with their counterparts in local Matemwe Village. In fact, adults might just enjoy a kick-a-bout too…
The house isn’t about white-washed beach glamour with all the mod-cons, but rather homely living in a rustic yet comfortable house that you can call home.
For ultimate privacy, the house is completely enclosed in its own bougainvillea-filled garden with direct access to the beach through a small gate. Inside, there’s a spacious open-plan living and dining area looking out to the sun-drenched deck and swimming pool and the splendid beach vistas beyond. A private chef and butler will happily cater for your every need, but if you fancy a change, the main lodge with pool, spa and restaurant is a short stroll along the beach.
There are 2 double bedrooms on the ground floor of the house (one is ensuite) and a mezzanine-level with twin beds at the top of a ladder-like staircase, for nimble young limbs! The rooms are organic and stylish with a hint of Zanzibari-chic; think white walls, dark furniture and splashes of bright fabrics and coconut shell details. Stone walls make even the hottest of days feel pleasantly cool inside, but mobile air-conditioning can also be arranged.

Matemwe really is a watersports paradise, and with an activity centre next door to the house, kayaking, snorkelling, fishing, sailing and diving are all easily arranged. You don’t have to limit yourself to the sea, however – visit Stone Town for a dose of Swahili culture, walk to the nearby village or discover new beaches by bicycle. And of course, there’s always a hammock and a good book or a massage to keep you busy.
In the gin-clear ocean around Zanzibar, marvel at bright corals with over 450 species of tropical fish, octopus, stingrays, moray eels, green turtles, hawksbill turtles, dolphins, humpback whales, and if you are very lucky: whales sharks and manta rays. In the coastal forests, spot the colobus and Sykes monkeys, bush babies, more than 50 species of butterfly, as well as brilliant bird species.
