About Selous Impala Camp

You can’t talk about Nyerere National Park ('The Selous') without mentioning the Rufiji River, the pulsing lifeblood of the area that virtually dissects the park in two and attracts a mesmerising array of animals. The camp's position on the banks of the waterway is unbeatable and, in our opinion, the best in the park. Its 9 tents tucked within a shady grove of trees are raised on stilts, allowing you a bird's-eye view of the splashing hippo below and the game on the opposite bank. The camp is flanked by two lakes, Mzizimia and Siwandu, which also offer great game and bird sightings throughout the year.

What you'll love

Fabulous Riverside location where you can almost feel the hippo's breath as they grunt the night away.

Something to think about

Tents are widely spread out - beware of animals.

The property

A breezy, open-sided tent covered by a huge thatch roof acts as the main area and funky, colourful sofas make it homely and authentic and the perfect place to watch the river. Nearby is the handsome and well-stocked bar, made from an old fishing canoe, and another lounge area in which to put your feet up and relax in style. There’s a small fireplace for breakfasts at sunrise and a swimming pool if the midday heat gets too much.

The rooms

With only a handful of tents dotted around the woodland and a maximum of 26 guests at any time, Impala is small and intimate. The Meru-style tents are also perfectly cosy with comfy beds covered in colourful local fabrics, canvas-and-gauze windows (one for the breeze, one to keep the insects out), fans and en-suite bathrooms with twin sinks and hot showers. Each room also has a viewing deck above the river, complete with safari chairs for a spot of siesta game-viewing.

Activities

However you like your game viewing, you can probably do it at Impala. Choose from magnificent trips down the river or on the nearby lakes and lagoons in the shade-top boats, walking safaris with experienced guides, private 4WD game drives twice a day and even fly-camping for the truly adventurous. Try your hand at catching some of the many species inclusinf tiger fish and tilapia. Finishing touches include hearty picnic breakfasts in the bush or sundowners from the boat as the sun sets across the water.
