Sol y Luna is a gorgeous Relais & Chateaux property in the heart of Urubamba, the unofficial capital of Cusco’s Sacred Valley. Hidden up a narrow lane, the natural setting is breath-taking: think impeccably-tended gardens with flowers, butterflies and birds in every direction. This, in combination with the valley’s blue sky, the calmness, and the mountain backdrop… enough said. But that's not even the best part: the hotel’s profits go directly to the Sol & Luna non-profit association, which supports a school for local children, as well as foster homes for students from the highland communities. True hospitality with a heart.
From $250 person/night
The incredible setting. Walk around the gardens, just taking in the view, or enjoy them from the outdoor pool, cocktail in hand.
If you miss the daily Peruvian Paso horse and traditional dance show, you can still walk down to the stables and say hello to the beautiful horses. Kids will love it too.
The hotel’s isolated-ish location means there isn't much choice for a coffee or dinner out, unless you book a taxi.
The architecture combines an avant-garde style with traditional adobe walls and stonework. Inside, the décor is all about warm hues and pays homage to local art and artists, with plenty of pieces by Federico Bauer adorning the corridors. The buffet breakfast is served at one of two restaurants, whilst the other - located in the ranch and open to the public - offers a lunchtime show of Peruvian horses. Food is amazing at both! For a spot of R&R, choose from the stained-glass encased spa, or the airy bar and poolside area with a good book and something cold.
The rooms are actually small houses spread around the gardens. Facing the Andes mountains, the stone-and-terracotta casitas have been individually decorated and all have private terraces to enjoy the epic views. With King or twin beds, the Superior casitas are cosy abodes with marble-tiled bathrooms and heavenly bed linen and bathrobes. Bigger Deluxe casitas throw in an LCD TV, fireplace, BOSE surround system and indulgent L’Occitane amenities, while Premium ones include a living area and private jacuzzi.
At Sol y Luna you can be as active (or not!) as you feel. Adventure junkies can choose between mountain or quad bikes, kayaking, horseback riding and even tandem paragliding - just picture those views of the Sacred Valley! Foodies will enjoy cooking lessons with the chef, experiencing a traditional (and delicious) pachamanca, or a tour of a local organic garden, and wellness seekers have endless options at the Yacu Wasi spa, including yoga or a workout at the gym. And, of course - archaeological sites and hikes all around.
