Lying just off Tanzania's tropical coastline in the glittering Indian Ocean, Zanzibar is a vibrant island with pristine reefs, white sandy beaches and a culture that carries echoes of its checkered past. Stone Town, the historic section of the island's capital, represents the spirit of this dynamic place, with its fascinating mix of African, Middle Eastern and European architecture and maze-like cobblestone streets. Beyond the urban centre, however, is an island paradise of exceptional beauty. Head to the northeast shore, near Matemwe village, to visit Villa Turquoise, an exclusive retreat that captures the beauty and easygoing pace to a T.
From $190 person/night
Your personal skipper is waiting to show you the ocean's incredible life and bounty whenever you're ready to budge from your hammock. (At an extra cost.)
Spacious Villa Turquoise has everything you need to feel right at home, that is if you're used to a private chef and people who clean up after you. For keen cooks, the chef will happily arrange cooking lessons to introduce you to traditional cuisine and the spices for which Zanzibar is famed.
Wander through the vivid garden with its mature palms, fruit trees and gently sloping lawns, to the pristine private beach.
The villa has an open-plan, breezy style with plenty of windows and outdoor spaces designed for lounging. A thatched roof shades the first-floor deck, where you can dine and chill, and enjoy palm-framed ocean panoramas. In all, there are four dining areas, including a beach barbecue for the freshest of seafood on the coals. There's a crystal-clear pool, a library and games room, and plenty of corners to retire to with a book. The beach? Well, it's just steps away.
Villa Turquoise sleeps up to 14 guests in four big en-suite bedrooms and an extra-large suite. All are beautifully furnished to reflect the local style, with dark wood furnishings and shutters, king-sized beds, sheer mosquito nets and African artifacts. The atmosphere throughout is casual and modern. The four rooms each sleep two (a third single bed can be added); the grand suite has two king-sized beds and a private terrace with views of the garden and ocean. Aircon is throughout.
A perfect family beach getaway, with glimpses of Matemwe's day-to-day activities – men spearfishing, brightly dressed women in search of shellfish, and schoolchildren playing ball.
At Villa Turquoise, you're expected to relax. The staff are happy to oblige if you breakfast early or late, want a picnic lunch or extra snacks with your cocktails. Feel like exploring the coastline, going deep-sea fishing, scuba diving, or snorkelling Menmba Island? A private boat and skipper await. Hike Jozani Forest to see threatened red colobus monkey, Sykes monkey, bushbabies and butterflies. Or dip your toes into history on a trip to Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In the gin-clear ocean around Zanzibar, marvel at bright corals with over 450 species of tropical fish, octopus, stingrays, moray eels, green turtles, hawksbill turtles, dolphins, humpback whales, and if you are very lucky: whales sharks and manta rays. In the coastal forests, spot the colobus and Sykes monkeys, bush babies, more than 50 species of butterfly, as well as brilliant bird species.
