A trip to the Western Cape is not complete without a jaunt through the Cape Winelands. The only problem you may have is choosing where to go and which of the hundreds of truly fabulous options to choose! Closest to Cape Town is the Constantia Wine Route, encompassing nine farms in the beautiful southern suburb of Constantia. Venture further out to Stellenbosch for some of the oldest Cape Dutch farms and working vineyards in the region, or to the quaint, French settler town of Franschhoek for glitzy vineyards and mouthwatering cuisine. The Hemel en Aarde Valley near Hermanus is also stunning, and you might be lucky enough to spot a whale as you sip – or is that just too many glasses of wine?!
Spend your days sipping ice-cold Chenin in the sunshine, surrounded by glorious mountainscapes, explore the boutiques of Franschhoek and the galleries of Stellenbosch, and sample award-winning cuisine in the smorgasbord of restaurants... That’s what we call a holiday!
Exclusive to South Africa and made with a hybrid grape that’s a blend of Cinsaut and Pinot Noir, Pinotage is a tipple that divides tasters. If you’ve yet to try it, head to Kanonkop Wine Estate for one of the best on the market.
Leave the hire car at home! Chances are, you’ll head out to the Winelands in your rental but when you get there, taxis (Uber is also available) should be the name of the game. They’re cheap and quick and you can enjoy that last glass, guilt-free.
