Namibia might be known as a self-driver’s dream but that doesn’t mean you have to pound the roads to enjoy it. This classic route is all about taking to the skies and flying between hotspots.
So, what’s in store on the ground? Not only are the iconic apricot dunes of Sossusvlei rather lovely to look at, they’re also pretty fun to explore and methods include horseback, quad bike and hot air balloon.
After an active stop in Swakopmund, you’ll be flying north to Damaraland – just make sure to keep an eye on the window, for the landscapes are mind-bogglingly marvellous from above.
Your last two stops bring sights of the animal variety; game drives in Damaraland are all about black rhino, whilst Etosha, Namibia’s most famous wildlife area, brings lion, elephant, cheetah and plenty of antelope.

You will fly from Windhoek International Airport to Sossusvlei Airstrip. You will be met on arrival at Sossusvlei Airstrip and driven to Kulala Desert Lodge.
1hr 30mins
Kulala Desert Lodge, like its sister Little Kulala, lies on the 210-square-kilometre private Kulala Wilderness Reserve in southern Namibia. The lodge's prime attraction is its proximity, and private entrance, to the Namib-Naukluft National Park, but its vast views are headline-worthy too – from the Namib-Naukluft dune sea in the west to the mountains in the east. Tear yourself away from the scenery to appreciate Kulala's eco-credentials, a subject the owners take very seriously, from the reusable water bottles you're given to the tips on saving water. The lodge is winsome and comfortable and, of course, there's that desert to explore.
There’s no doubt that the pumpkin-hued dunes of Sossusvlei are utterly captivating and a dream to experience. That means the real question is: how to enjoy them? Climbing and walking activities depart either at sunrise or sunset to avoid the baking heat. Climbs range from the epic Dune 45 (the tallest) to moderate hikes and strolls along smaller dunes, and the best part is always the descent! 4x4 drives are also an option, covering larger areas and visiting a variety of dunes. They usually involve nature lessons in the incredible flora of the desert and wildlife-watching – oryx, zebra, meerkat and mongoose are all present, if rare.
For many, seeing the dunes from the sky is the ultimate in bucket-list travel, and hot air balloons and scenic flights are a fantastic option. Usually provided by third-party operators, there’s not much choice in departure location and a (very) early start may be required, but oh boy, is it worth it. Other experiences include trips to the iconic Deadvlei, e-biking, quad biking and an iconic star sleep-out.
You will be collected from Kulala Desert Lodge and driven to Sossusvlei Airstrip for your flight to Walvis Bay International Airport. You will be met on arrival at Walvis Bay International Airport and driven to Strand Hotel.
2hrs 30mins
Since its opening in 2015, the Strand Hotel has been making some serious waves. Situated right on the peninsula in Swakopmund, where the Namib dunes melt into the Atlantic, the hotel's location is hard to beat. And the decor … it’s like a trendy metropolitan hotel combined with a light and breezy seaside ambiance. Did we mention there’s a brewery on site? You’ll find locally crafted beer, effervescent sunsets, a lovely spa and seafood by the boatload at this sparkling Swakopmund gem.
Namibia’s self-titled ‘adventure’ capital, Swakopmund certainly has its fair share of heart-thumping, adrenalin-pumping activities for those so inclined. But it’s also a picturesque coastal town with a distinct German flavour (think apple pies and Art Nouveau architecture) and there’s much to offer for a sedate few days by the sea.
Falling into the former category are dune-related activities on the outskirts of town. From quad biking to sand boarding to fat biking, the sand dunes are king and helmets are key, and the sheer number of operators will leave you spoilt for choice. Sky diving trips also depart from here, and you’ll fall out of the sky over the spectacular Swakop River mouth.
Otherwise, there are walking tours to enjoy, catamaran cruises to indulge in, and shops and restaurants to peruse, all of which lend themselves to a peaceful morning or afternoon. If you’re spending longer in the area, try a day trip to Sandwich Harbour and marvel at the enormous dunes and vast wetlands, or enjoy a birds-eye view of the coast on a scenic fixed-wing flight.
You will be collected from Strand Hotel and driven to Walvis Bay International Airport for your flight to Damaraland Airstrip. You will be met on arrival at Damaraland Airstrip and driven to Mowani Mountain Camp.
2hrs 30mins
Damaraland in north-west Namibia is an ancient, boulder-strewn landscape of heat, dust and extraordinary beauty. This is the middle of nowhere, so finding tranquil Mowani Mountain Camp, tucked among the giant ochre rocks, is a real surprise. The lodge's organic design has earned it an architectural eco-design award, and the interior decor combines elegance, earthiness and tranquility. The accommodation is spacious and comfortable, the food is great, the game drives are rewarding and you could lose yourself in the views. Desperate for some peace? You'll find it here in spades.
This vast expanse of desert is one of Africa’s last unofficial wildernesses and the landscape is so colossal and so completely, eerily different to anything else, it’s hard to imagine until you’ve visited. A unique feature are the rocky outcrops, which are often home to exceptional San paintings. Twyfelfontein has some of the best and most well-preserved, but the Brandberg, Namibia’s highest mountain, also has beautiful examples. Why choose, both are certainly worth a trip.
When you’re not ogling the scenery, keep your eyes peeled for desert-adapted wildlife. Gemsbok and oryx are common, as are zebra and elephant, but black rhino are the stars of the show and with Save the Rhino Trust based in the area, sightings are excellent. Game drives are key for wildlife-spotting (you’ll cover larger distances) but walking safaris are also a must to discover the finer details of the desert and even track these rare rhino and elephant on foot. In some areas, horseback safaris are possible, as are trips to see the fascinating Petrified Forest, a 260-million-year-old phenomena.
You will be collected from Mowani Mountain Camp and driven to Damaraland Airstrip for your flight to Etosha Airstrip. You will be met on arrival at Etosha Airstrip and driven to Onguma Tented Camp.
2hrs 30mins
This lovely stone and canvas lodge in private Onguma Reserve embraces a floodlit waterhole that can be seen from both the main areas and the suites. Onguma Tented Camp is a paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers, offering a unique opportunity to create cherished memories in the heart of Namibia.
Etosha is a 22 750km² wildlife sanctuary in Namibia – one of Africa’s most stable and accessible countries. Etosha, meaning ‘place of dry water’, and refers to a flat calcrete depression (or pan) of about 5 000km². The ‘Pan’ (overlooked by the Onguma Reserve) provides a great, parched, silver-white backdrop of shimmering mirages to an area of semi-arid savannah grassland and thorn scrub. The pan itself contains water only after very good rains and sometimes for only a few days each year, but is enough to stimulate the growth of a blue-green algae which lures
Onguma Reserve consists of 34 000 hectares of Namibian wilderness and is home to numerous plains game, more than 300 bird species and even 4 of the “Big 5”. After enjoying a game drive into Etosha National Park in the morning, you have several options to choose from when you return to your camp. Join us on one of the following activities:
The Reserve boasts over thirty different animal species. Plains game roam freely on the Reserve and predators although not always easy to spot, are nevertheless common residents of the area. Lions and Cheetahs are frequently seen and often heard. There is a healthy black rhino and leopard population and hyenas are also often seen and heard. All of which can be spotted during our Sundowner Drives.
Their interpretive bush walks will bring you closer to nature by exposing you to the intimate detail of the surroundings.
It is a chance to exist for a period of time in the original, primitive atmosphere of the wilderness; to watch from a respectful distance the intimate lives of wild animals of the African bushveld.
Onguma’s fabulous new water-level hide affords guests a great opportunity to calmly sit and enjoy nature unobserved. Amateur and professional photographers alike love the angles and light from this equipped hide.
There is a small ablution facility nearby Onkolo Hide, benches from which to view the surroundings and lots of windows and vantage points for creative camera angles.
Our Etosha Game drives take guests into the Etosha National Park in the mornings and afternoons and are guided by our expert guides and in our open-sided vehicles.
You will be collected from Onguma Tented Camp and driven to Etosha Airstrip for your flight to Windhoek International Airport.
