Spending time with Africa’s primates is enchanting, enthralling and very, very special – and this route allows you to visit not one, but two different species in Rwanda and Tanzania.
In Tanzania, you’re headed to Rubondo Island, a jungle-clad idyll amid the sparkling waters of Lake Victoria. Chimpanzee were first brought here in the 1960s and are now habituated to human contact, making for a unique trekking experience.
From here you’ll fly to Volcanoes in Rwanda, possibly the most famous gorilla trekking destination there is, and hikes and treks will bring you eye to eye with the mountain gorilla.
And if you’re looking for a more traditional safari experience to add on, we highly recommend Tanzania’s Serengeti for game viewing to take your breath away.

This low-key town is the gateway to Tanzania’s safari gems and most itineraries include at least a night in Arusha. You’ll likely spend most of your time gathering your bearings before your safari adventure begins or taking things easy after an action-packed few days, both accompanied by the stellar views of nearby Mount Meru.
You certainly won’t get bored should you choose to venture out, however, and there are plenty of activities to keep you busy: enjoy a guided stroll between Maasai markets (for Tinga Tinga paintings, handmade jewellery and Shuka textiles), peruse the museums, or visit the bright green fields of the coffee farms and sample some of Africa’s finest beans. If you’re heading straight for the coast or just fancy an extra dose of wildlife, visit Arusha National Park, where monkeys, giraffes and a host of birdlife are all present and correct, and you can canoe, mountain bike and explore on game drives.
You will be collected from your lodge and driven to Arusha Airport for your flight to Serengeti Airstrip. You will be met on arrival at Serengeti Airstrip and driven to your next lodge.

Famous for the mighty Great Migration, wildebeest-watching is high on the list of most who visit the Serengeti. The location of the herds differs by month but as a rough guide, you’ll catch the famous river crossings in the north from July to October and the calving and birthing season in the south from December to March. Visit at other times and the herds will be in the Western Corridor (April to June) or travelling back through the central areas.
Game drives are available from almost every lodge in the Serengeti. All offer camera-snapping sightings of four out of the Big Five (sadly rhino sightings are rare), as well as cheetah, zebra, giraffe and all the smaller game, whether you choose a morning or afternoon drive or an all-day expedition with a picnic. Night drives and walking safaris are less common but can be done from some camps, and other location-specific activities include hot air ballooning (usually the north), horseback safaris (west), cultural visits and community projects. If this list of activities doesn’t make you swoon…

Despite its turbulent past, Kigali is safe and incredibly friendly, and makes a wonderful welcome to the magic of Rwanda. History and culture are evident everywhere you look and a city tour should be number one on your list, no matter how long you are staying for. Highlights include the Inema Art Centre, a contemporary gallery showcasing work from East and Central Africa, the museum of natural history, the iconic Milles Collines hotel, and Kimironko Market, where you can spend your pennies on everything from fruit to fabrics, cookware to clothing. For a quick break in between, pop into Question for a cup of the good stuff and a glimpse into Rwanda’s booming industry.
A stay in Kigali shouldn’t pass by without a visit to the Genocide Memorial. A necessary and sobering reminder of the country’s tumultuous history, it’s also a reminder of its bright future and the resilience of all who live here.

Volcanoes is one of the best places in the world for gorilla trekking, so there are no prizes for guessing what you’ll be getting up to. There are several habituated gorilla families in the forest so it’s (slightly) easier to gauge trekking times, but there’s still no guarantee how long you may need to walk for. Pack those comfy boots! Treks depart with the sparrows, are led by seasoned guides and scouts, and will take you through the juicy, green forests of the lower volcanoes. After you first lay eyes on your gorillas, you’ll spend an hour with them before heading back.
Aside from the furry star attraction, there’s a good selection of activities in Volcanoes making a longer stay attractive. If you’re keen to dig deeper into the forest and all its inhabitants, try trekking with endangered golden monkeys or hiking to Dian Fossey’s grave and seeing what you can spot along the way. Possibilities include lots of monkeys, gorgeous flora, and small antelope. We also recommend taking a walk into the local villages and meeting the communities, and exploring the crater lakes, time allowing.
You will be collected from your lodge and driven to Kigali International Airport.
