Why you'll love it

Named after the famous explorer, Sir Francis Galton, Galton House is one of Windhoek's most fabulous accommodation options, with a relaxed but efficient style and a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The interior decor combines modern minimalism and understated chic, highlighting the dramatic photographic prints and canvases of local wildlife that adorn the walls.

Galton House lies in a quiet suburb and anyone staying here can be assured of peace and tranquillity. The food is superb – the owner's wife operates a popular restaurant in the city, so expect to eat well. And you're guaranteed strong Wi-Fi throughout the house.

What you can do

Like a little slice of Europe in surreal, wildly-beautiful Namibia, Windhoek is a place to catch your breath in the midst of a busy itinerary. The hotels are ideal for putting your feet up, while the pretty streets are a history lesson on their own with Germanic castles, aged churches, and museums in every direction. And on any given corner, you’ll likely find a tempting pastry shop to keep you sustained...

What you can do

Namibia’s self-titled ‘adventure’ capital, Swakopmund certainly has its fair share of heart-thumping, adrenalin-pumping activities for those so inclined. But it’s also a picturesque coastal town with a distinct German flavour (think apple pies and Art Nouveau architecture) and there’s much to offer for a sedate few days by the sea.

Falling into the former category are dune-related activities on the outskirts of town. From quad biking to sand boarding to fat biking, the sand dunes are king and helmets are key, and the sheer number of operators will leave you spoilt for choice. Sky diving trips also depart from here, and you’ll fall out of the sky over the spectacular Swakop River mouth.

Otherwise, there are walking tours to enjoy, catamaran cruises to indulge in, and shops and restaurants to peruse, all of which lend themselves to a peaceful morning or afternoon. If you’re spending longer in the area, try a day trip to Sandwich Harbour and marvel at the enormous dunes and vast wetlands, or enjoy a birds-eye view of the coast on a scenic fixed-wing flight.

We can organise these activities at an additional cost.

Today, Okonjima Nature Reserve is recognized as one of the premier places to stay to witness carnivores and other endangered species like the aardvark, pangolin and brown hyena in the wild and to be educated about conservation. Its emphasis on authenticity, on luxury and on the environment has made it a jewel in Namibian tourism. Part of the symbiotic relationship is that monies raised through the Okonjima Nature Reserve, help to fund the important conservation research programmes and education projects with which the Hanssens are also engaged, under the banner of AfriCat.

Activities you can enjoy on the reserve include game drives focused on tracking leopards (included in your stay) or endangered species, general game drives, visits to AfriCat Carnivore Care & Information Centre (ACCC) and even tracking rhino and pangolin on foot.

If you are interested in adding any of these activities please let me know.
