When the expression, 'not for the faint-hearted' was invented, they might have just been speaking about trekking to the top of the Nyiragongo volcano. Reaching the summit takes between four to six hours (and 6.5km), taking you through verdant forest where chimps, three-horned chameleons and fluttering birdlife dwell, and across crystalised lava flows with sprawling vistas. You'll stop for a 15-minute break at five locations and along the way, your seasoned trekking guide will share the secrets of the Virungas, its flora and fauna, and where to get the best shots. As you climb, the views become increasingly beautiful, until you reach the summit at 3470 metres high, where you'll gaze into the bubbling cauldron of Nyiragongo - the world's largest lava lake. The adventure doesn't end there, you'll spend the night in a hut perched along the volcano rim, the sound of the crashing lava piercing through the silent night air. Wake to views over the cloud-tops, enjoy breakfast cooked over a fire by the chef before returning to base.
