Aman's very first urban foray, the hotel stays true to the brand's signature style whilst also capturing the minimalism of traditional Japanese design with plenty of sleek, slate-coloured tiles, washi paper and vast walls of glass. Sitting high above Tokyo's Otemachi district, the Aman occupies the top six floors of a 38-storey skyscraper and promises gleaming views of the city. In a city of exquisite dining, Aman boasts the cream of the crop, including their very unique 'Black Afternoon Tea' – let your imagination go wild. Spanning 2,500 square metres, the spa is a dream and after a few hours of pampering, you'll float out feeling brand new.
The elevator doors open onto the vast 33rd-floor lobby, where a striking ikebana flower arrangement tells you that you've arrived at an Aman. Come hungry as there are plenty of dining experiences to choose from, including an authentic omakase at Musashi, prepared with ingredients fetched from the fish market that morning; Italian dishes followed by a cone from the roaming ice cream man at Arva; and don't miss the foie gras brioche French toast at the Cafe. The Aman also boasts one of the largest and most luxurious spas in Tokyo, where you'll find a heated pool with a serious view.
A modern twist on Japan's ryokan inns, the rooms are understated with light wood, sliding shoji screens inlaid with washi paper, and beautiful touches like tatami mats and calligraphy artwork. The rooms are among the largest in Tokyo, beginning at 71 square metres, and the most spacious include a separate living and dining area. Floor-to-ceiling windows reveal a dazzling view of the city – a retractable TV ensures they're uninterrupted – and best enjoyed whilst soaking in the deep furo bathtub.
The hotel offers a unique selection of curated experiences, including art tours tailored to your tastes, an immersion into Japan's ancient crafts, sumo wrestling demonstrations, or private lessons in the art of Iaido. The Aman is also within an easy distance of the Imperial Palace Gardens, Tokyo's historic Ote-mon and Sakurada Gates, and the Nijubashi Bridge. After a day of exploring, return for a fragrant Shiatsu massage or soak in the onsen-style tub, then enjoy a sunset cruise along the Sumida River.
It's difficult to pick a favourite thing about the Aman but the spa certainly surpasses every expectation. It's one of Tokyo's finest, without a doubt!
A floor below the actual hotel, La Patisserie is like a museum of food, where beautiful baked creations and handmade chocolates are on display. They also do fantastic on-the-go lunches if you're pressed for time.
Certain suites offer a view of the Imperial Palace Gardens and grand Mount Fuji in the background. We know which room we'd opt for...
