About Angama Mara Camp

If you’ve seen the film ‘Out of Africa’, a safari to the golden-hued savannah of the Masai Mara is probably near the top of your bucket list. And where better to go than the famous spot where Meryl Streep gazed longingly at a rugged Robert Redford? This is Angama Mara, sited on that very kopje, high in the hills of the Oloololo Escarpment with a view so everlasting it’s startling. Designed by Silvio Rech, a man who just ‘gets it’ when it comes to lodge design and run by Nicky Fitzgerald of &Beyond fame, this is the stuff of your wildest, most romantic and evocatively perfect safari dreams.

What you'll love

The views take centre stage here and they are, quite simply, phenomenal. Even better, you’ll often have a parade of animals to accompany them.

Insiders tip

Choose your dining spot carefully; a light bite in the bar, a champagne picnic on the kopje or a lantern-filled dinner for two are just some of your options…

Something to think about

There are a lot of rooms at Angama and several are really quite close together – be prepared to wave to your neighbour on the next-door veranda!

The property

Inspired by Nairobi’s infamous Muthaiga Club, the (enormous) bar, library and chilled out seating-area oozes old-world originality, romance and charm. But it’s not all whisky decanters and tartan blankets either -South African super-stylist Annemarie Mentjies made sure of that! - and amidst the glittering glass walls and intricate brickwork you’ll find blood-red chairs, French Fermob furniture and bold motifs. A swimming pool and fitness room complete the contemporary picture but the piece de resistance has to be the sunken firepit, suspended 1000 feet above the endless plains of the Mara. Grab a G&T, pronto.

The rooms

With a Little Black Book of designers to rival a Vogue fashion shoot, the 30 canvas-and-glass tents (divided into two camps of 15) are something else. Big, beautiful and ingeniously designed to ‘float’ over the Mara Triangle below, the view from the glass-walled front and veranda beyond is mind-blowing. Inside, there are roll-top baths atop shining parquet floors, splashes of red amongst neutral canvas and beds big enough to spend all day in. Bathrooms are splashy and spectacular with Africology toiletries and twin basins.

Activities

Game Drives
Walking safari
Hot Air Ballooning
Bush Walks

A safari the Angama-way means a private vehicle, guide and a whole host of activities to choose from. Fancy a hot air balloon ride across the glimmering plains? Not a problem. Want to visit a local village and dance with the Maasai? Absolutely. How about watching a pride of lion, undisturbed and in your own time? Of course. And if you don’t even want to think about an activity, sit back, relax and let us pamper you with massages, picnics and drinks on tap.

The Masai Mara is Kenya's flagship conservation region: a place of rolling plains, bush scrub and acacia thicket— known for the seasonal great wildebeest migration, a mass movement of more than two million, wildebeest, zebra, kongoni, topi and gazelle. As exciting as this phenomenon is, there is so much more to this wilderness. Encounter elephants, buffalo, hippo, giraffe, crocodiles and a variety of cats including lion, cheetah, leopard and the shy serval during a stay in these parts.
