On the northwest coast of Madagascar, the 750-hectare Anjajavy Reserve is brimming with flora and fauna, including lemurs and a bay filled with extraordinary tsingy coral. Hotel Anjajavy lies on the edge of the reserve, a delightful series of chalets between the lush mangroves and seashore. The 15-year-old hotel has grown to blend perfectly with its natural surrounds and continues to strive for a symbiotic relationship between ecological and social sustainability, and luxury tourism. The hotel can only be reached by charter flight, but if it means you will be having your tea with the lemurs, how could you not?
From $620 person/night
A naturalist's dream: Anjajavy Reserve is home 2000 varieties of plants, 130 bird species, and 7 species of lemur. The Hotel commits to preserving this biodiversity by protecting its species and using its resources in a sustainable manner. Expect organic, locally sourced produce in the restaurant.
Spot lemurs every evening as they hop from branch to branch in the lodge's lush gardens.
Enjoy a private picnic on one of the 12 deserted beaches in the vicinity, or explore the infamous 'seven creeks' that lead to the sea. You're unlikely to see another soul - so remember to take your camera for photographic evidence!
A huge rosewood terrace skirts the front of Anjajavy's main dining and lounge area. Simply designed with a central wooden bar, there are directors chairs scattered, and crisp, white linen-covered tables overlooking the manicured gardens and giant palm trees. Adjoining the deck is a huge, glistening swimming pool, with deckchairs and large canvas umbrellas. Just a hop, skip and a jump further and you're on the beach, where on a still evening, you can dine with sand between your toes.
24 beautifully appointed, A-frame wooden villas stand on stilts along the beach. Each has its own spacious terrace with simple canvas furniture for lounging and enjoying fabulous views of the sea. The chalets are simple but attractive, with Madagascan rosewood furnishings throughout. Each has a living room, bedroom and en-suite bathroom, and up a small staircase, a private relaxation room. Lest we forget the gorgeously large corner-bath to really kick back and relax. Mosquito nets and air-conditioning are provided.
This part of Madagascar is blessed with a lot more sunny days than rain, but remember that the lodge is closed mid-Jan to late March.
