Located in the Buffalo Springs Game Reserve, with the Ewaso Nyiro River separating it from the Samburu National Reserve, this luxury tented camp is home to some very special wildlife and an abundance of bird species, all flocking here because of the springs, which provide permanent drinking water. While the size of the camp gives it and its facilities a slightly institutional feel, service is personable and efficient, tents are comfortable, and the guides on the game drives are passionate and eager to impart their knowledge to guests. Everybody, from honeymooners to families, will feel welcome here.
From $260 person/night
Animals come right up to the electric fence a mere 10 meters from the tents, so guests are in for quite a wildlife experience.
A visit to the Samburu villages, where you can get to know the locals and buy crafts as keepsakes.
A visit from Kenneth the resident elephant will ensure you awaken with a smile.
The main area is big and less intimate than other tented game lodges. The dining room is restaurant-style, with separate tables and chairs seating over 100 people. Food is buffet. There is a comfortable lounge and bar area where drinks can be enjoyed, and a swimming pool with plenty of recliners for guests to relax in. There are also conferencing facilities and a business centre, and an infirmary with a nurse to assist those feeling a bit under the weather.
There are 30 tents - eighteen with double beds, nine with twin beds, three with triple beds. All are en-suite and spacious, with dressing a area and lounge. A small private deck overlooks the river and is the perfect spot to check the animals coming and going. Tents are fixed on wooden structures so they’re sturdy and it looks luxe. Tents further away from the main lodge are quieter and so you have a better chance of seeing more wildlife.
Generators are switched from 4-6 and from midnight to 5 am, so make sure you charge what needs to be charged before then.
The main activities are the morning and afternoon game drives, both at fixed times. This area is known for its abundance of the Special Five: reticulated giraffe, Grevys zebra, Somali ostrich, beisa oryx and the gerenuk, and over 400 bird species. There are other activities on offer, like guided bush walks, sundowners and massages, but enquire first whether it carries an additional cost. The camp about a 30-minute drive from the Samburu National Reserve, so day trips are possible.
Show all wildlife
Encounter a diversity of species in the arid and beautiful Samburu National Reserve, including herds of elephant and buffalo, prides of lions and both cheetah and leopard. However, what separates the Samburu from other parks is its unique wildlife, including the gerenuk, Grevy's zebra, Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe and blue legged Somali ostrich. A noteworthy mention is the reintroduction of the last member of the Big 5: black rhinoceros, currently scarce but making good progress.
