About Sanctuary Baines' Camp

Nestling among the trees and surrounded by waving papyrus grass, Baines' Camp is properly remote. It lies in the private Stanley Concession, an unspoiled wilderness of 1300-plus square kilometres containing only two camps. Baines' Camp has been beautifully crafted from wood and canvas topped with local thatch for cooling and to camouflage the buildings, all of which have been constructed on raised wooden platforms above the Boro River, one of the main channels draining the Okavango Delta. Beds with wheels mean that you can spend the night gazing at stars and sleeping under the moon.

As the camp is located in a private concession, guided walking and night safaris are available.

The property

The central area, built from commercially grown wood and recycled cans collected by the local community (for a fee), sits above the waters of the Boro River. There are plenty of areas to relax and view the wildlife, which is near and often within the camp. Outside is a swimming pool with comfy loungers. The meals are excellent – served on the deck or in the bush, and there's a firepit where guests gather for sundowners and to share experiences.

The rooms

Baines' Camp has just six luxurious suites, each with its own bathroom and ample private decking. The rooms have been beautifully equipped with all the luxuries you don't expect in the bush – fine-quality linens and comfortable seating. The four-poster Sky Beds, well-netted against mosquitoes, can be wheeled onto the deck for a sleep-out under the stars.

Wandering through the bush in the company of three elephants was an amazing experience. Seeing hippo and crocs from so nearby was both exciting and alarming – thank heavens for the stilts beneath the buildings and the walkways.
