Imagine a coral island with a lush green interior, five kilometres of fine white coral-sand beaches and a sparkling blue ocean that reaches to the horizon. Being a castaway on Bird Island would be relatively painless. In fact, the island is a private island sanctuary with just one eco-lodge for human visitors. Learn about the island's history (at its base is a reef that dates back up to 125,000 years). Meet giant land tortoises, including Esmeralda, the world's largest. Snorkel with the marine life, discover the island's richness of birds and stay in chalets open to the tropical breezes. Paradise!
From $260 person/night
There are few places on the planet that are as untouched as Bird Island and it's only a 30-minute flight from Mahé. Feel everyday worries slip away as you walk along secluded beaches, marvel at the remarkable island birdlife and discover colourful coral reefs.
The lodge itself is a highlight. Far removed from the familiar overpriced and over-the-top luxury hotels, Bird Island Lodge embraces the simplicity of island life, with unpretentious comfort and owners and staff whose passion for maintaining their pristine surroundings is clear.
Learning about the wildlife. Education and awareness are central to the lodge's owners, who'll arrange guided tours to see the island's wild creatures and show you the sustainable lifestyle they follow.
The lodge's main area comprises a restaurant, bar and lounge. The relaxed bar and lounge are a stone's throw from West Beach and the ideal place to enjoy afternoon tea or a pre-dinner cocktail crafted by the expert barman. Also overlooking the sea is the open-sided restaurant, where you'll feast on dishes that focus on fresh seafood and organic homegrown fruits and vegetables. Special food requirements will be met, but be sure to notify the lodge when making your reservation.
On the island's west coast, 24 chalets have been tucked among coconut palms, all that remain of the island's previous incarnation as a palm plantation. The decor is tranquil, with all the amenities you need for a happy stay – a king-sized bed, seating area, en-suite bathroom, veranda, and wi-fi. However, in an effort to keep power usage to a minimum, there's no aircon (the chalets are designed to make the most of the breezes), fridge, telephone or TV.
Bird Island takes your breath away from the moment you come in to land. It’s a magical place and a piece of paradise still left untouched. Just don't forget to pack mosquito repellent.
