Tucked away in the Aravali hills, Bujera Fort is flanked by views of some of Udaipur's gems - the renowned City Palace, Fateh Garh Castle and Lake Pichola. Although it was only built in 2016, Bujera feels like its been there forever and with salvaged windows and doors, the fort has a historic charm. Amidst the greenery of farmland, the fort feels hidden away enough for pure relaxation but close to enough to enjoy the city fun. Its peachy walls are surrounded by jasmine and champa trees, which fill the air with sweetness and in winter, G&Ts around the bonfire are a delight.
From $170 person/night
Although grand in looks, Bujera Fort feels totally unpretentious with personalised meals, warm service and the unique welcome by resident labradors, Sadie and Jack.
If you fancy an extra touch of privacy, the ground floor Cottage Suite opens its French doors into a pretty walled garden with a plunge pool and dining pavilion.
Udaipur is about 20 minutes away from Bujera so you can't step out into the thick of the city from your doorstep.
Bujera Fort is a welcoming melange of traditional style complete with Rattan furnishings and 86 hand-carved stone columns, mixed with the shabby chic interiors of an English country house. There are plenty of places to relax including cushy jharokhas, lovely gardens, the book-laden library and stylish drawing room complete with a silver grand piano. Dining is a 'farm-to-fork' affair with a small menu of continental and Indian fare adapted to your tastes. Enjoy treatments at the spa and a dip in the stepwell-style monochrome pool surrounded by resplendent lawns - and a tennis court!
With just 14 rooms, Bujera has the feel of a boutique hotel in the trappings of a grand fort. Decorated with rich fabrics and Indian antiques, the selection includes Cloister Rooms, Cottage Suites and Master Suites, which each come with a private patio, marble bathrooms (ala block printed dressing gowns) and a view over the lush gardens. The suites also have a cushy lounge area while the Master Suites boast lovely refurbished fireplaces to warm you on winter nights.
You can't spend a few nights at this countryside fort without exploring its backyard of local villages and hillside trails, which you can do by walking tour or bicycle. The famous sights of Udaipur are well within reach too and the city of dazzling lakes, ornate palaces and vibrant shopping lanes are yours to experience. Visit a sword maker family where you'll learn all about their ancient art of Koftgari, discover fascinating Mewar history at Durbar Hall and hop aboard a sunset cruise on Lake Pichola.
