Camp Linyanti is an intimate tented camp in the most northerly sector of Botswana's Chobe National Park – don't confuse it with the government-run campsites named "Camp Linyanti 1, 2 and 3", which are basic, bring-your-own-tent options. In contrast, Camp Linyanti offers all-inclusive, comfortable accommodation with expertly guided activities. The landscape here is diverse, with dry mopane woodland south of the camp, floodplains to the north and riverine forest along the banks of the Linyanti River. This diversity is echoed in the wildlife – there's plenty of it, from predators to huge herds of elephant in the dry winter months.
From $570 person/night
With only five tents, the camp offers a secluded experience far from the crowds seen elsewhere in Chobe.
The Linyanti is one of the best places in southern Africa to view African wild dogs, so keep your eyes peeled for a blur of black and gold and white speeding through the woodlands.
Huge numbers of elephants congregate in the area from July to October, often swimming across the river, which makes for an awesome sight.
A large, shaded wooden deck sits on the bank of a wide lagoon in the Linyanti River, with sensational views across the floodplain towards neighbouring Namibiaʼs Caprivi Strip. Mealtimes are relaxed, with hearty dishes served at simple dining table on the deck, and a few plush couches are arranged along its back. The set-up is plain, but the environment and the sweeping views are definitely not. In the evenings, gather around the water's-edge fire pit for a companionable chat.
Five rounded canvas tents, including one honeymoon tent, are built on slightly raised wooden decks along the edge of the lagoon. Double or twin beds draped with mosquito nets fill most of the space, with the rest taken up with an en-suite bathroom furnished with basin, toilet and outdoor shower (honeymooners also have a tub). Air-conditioning is most welcome, since it can get extremely hot in September/October, and extra blankets are provided for warmth in June/July.
A lovely riverfront setting, comfortable tents and good food. The guiding is excellent, and a lagoon trip is a must. Remember your mosquito repellent, though.
Open April to October, Camp Linyanti is a great place to see a panoply of wildlife. Morning and late-afternoon game drives reveal huge herds of elephant, buffalo and zebra, rare sable antelope, birds and predators galore, including wild dogs and seldom-seen brown hyenas. Explore the lagoon on the Swamp Cruiser, a motorboat with both four-stroke and quiet electric motors to glide the waters in silence. It's a good vantage point to watch the sun set, surrounded by grunting hippos.
Show all wildlife
The Linyanti's diverse environment is composed of woodlands, marshlands, savannah and palm islands, attracting a wide variety of species. The area is famous for large herds of elephant, buffalo, giraffe, roan, sable, zebra, and more. However, it is the predators that take centre stage in the Linyanti, with the rare wild dog, lion, cheetah and leopard producing some thrilling encounters.
