About Camp Okavango

Recently refurbished, Camp Okavango now offers some of the most beautiful and elegant accommodation available in this pristine region of the Delta. This part of the private Shindi concession has a wide range of habitats but is dominated by permanent channels and shallow floodplains, making activities primarily water-focused. There is no vehicle traffic to disturb the peace. This camp suits a traveller whose priority is relaxation and experiencing the stunning landscape surrounding this private, luxurious camp. It offers an altogether different experience of the wilderness, where seeing big game is not the sole focus.

Highlights

A guided walk on an uninhabited (at least by humans) island offers excellent opportunities to track down some larger game (think elephant, buffalo, kudu), whilst paying mind to the oft-missed smaller intricacies of the bushveld.

Glide through the channels on a peaceful mokoro (a traditional dugout canoe) Safari, soaking up the chorus of amphibians and waterfowl, while keeping a lookout for red lechwe and the elusive sitatunga antelope.

Fishing from the boat (strictly catch and release) is a great way to see the aquatic players in this incredible ecosystem, and may be your best chance of glimpsing the prized tiger fish.

The property

Playing on the theme of the Delta's multitude of islands interconnected by channels and waterways, the camp's saligna walkways wind and weave their way around the island, linking the guest suites with two lounge areas, a bar and dining room, a small library and a curio shop. Another wooden walkway leads to a very cool infinity pool right on the edge of the swamp, with plenty of comfortable sun-loungers under a shade-giving thatched lapa. Find a double fire pit on the deck in front of the lounge and dining room, that makes clever use of some beautiful wooden benches and maximises the mesmerizing view.

The rooms

Twelve guest suites including one family unit, accommodate up to 24 guests. There is extensive use of several different kinds of wood, from the large front door to the cupboards and the floor. Concertina glass doors fold away in front of both the bed and a separate lounge area, creating the sense of the room seamlessly extending onto the private deck, ensuring uninterrupted panoramas of the bush around you. Even the spacious double shower and the basin in the en-suite bathroom have views. There's also a desk with a comfortable writing chair as well as a little tea/coffee station.

Bush Walks

Because of its location amongst the permanent channels and floodplains of the Okavango, "Camp O" focuses its attention on water-based activities and leaves game drives off the programme. There are a myriad of waterways to explore by motorboat so there's always a good chance of seeing hippos, crocodiles, buffalo and elephants as you go. Take a fishing rod along for some pretty rewarding catch-and-release fun. Mokoros provide a traditional and supremely peaceful method of adventuring, allowing you to appreciate this unique landscape while looking for the wildlife inhabiting it. If you want to stretch your legs and freshen your senses, take a guided walk on one of the many nearby islands - search for life big and small.
