In the northern reaches of Colombia, Barichara is a picturesque medley of cobblestones and white-washed walls, painted shutters and creeping bougainvillea. Not far from the pretty main plaza, Casa Miajara was built in harmony with the city's aesthetic, with a specific focus on using recycled materials and techniques typical of the region. Surrounded by beautiful flowering gardens, the Casa is a calming oasis where days are best spent soaking up the views of Barichara's magnificent cathedral and the Yariguies Mountains.
From $40 person/night
A rarity in Barichara, the casa has a lovely secluded pool with a view of the cathedral.
There are some delightful vantage points from which to enjoy the views, so be sure to take the time to just soak up the atmosphere.
The rooms are quite minimalist, so don't expect high-tech amenities but rather a charming, simpler way of life.
Designed by Luz Mario Jaramillo, Casa Miajara fits uniquely into the curve of the land. The hotel has a number of social areas, all of which flow into the outdoors and have superb views of the city and beyond. They are surrounded by gardens filled with blooms and greenery and there are hammocks strung up in every corner to ensure there's always somewhere to relax. Enjoy hearty, locally-inspired meals in the dining room, which also benefits from the same fantastic garden views.
There are just four rooms at Casa Miajara including a Master Bedroom on the first floor. Simple and classic, they showcase the fantastic views of the city, cathedral and mountains, which you can enjoy while lazing in your hammock. The furnishings and decor were specifically designed for the casa using regional materials like banana leaves, wood, stone and wrought iron. Two of the rooms enjoy a private terrace and there's also a duplex studio for a touch more space.
Explore Barichara's maze of streets, finding artisanal studios to frequent – the town is known for its stone carving and pottery – and marvelling at the aged architecture like the iconic central cathedral. The town of Barichara is on the edge of the Chicomocha Canyon and there's ample opportunity for adventures including trekking, biking, ziplining and white-water rafting. Helicopter flights are also available, offering sensational views of the surrounding landscape.
