Rock walls and dirt paths lend Chacma its rustic charm. The outdoor, but covered, dining room and open-air lounge blend the style and comfort of smart furnishings with the ever-present air of anticipation that a furry or feathered local may pass. The setting is definitely entrancing, ideal for devoted bush-lovers and first-timers alike. Adding to the comfort is a cool pool, set at the edge of the deck, within view of the waterhole frequented by a steady stream of wildlife.
With just three chalets, Chacma keeps things intimate. Each stone-and-thatch cottage has a different configuration to accommodate families of three, four or six in entirely adequate quarters. You can expect comfortable mattresses, en-suite facilities with walk-in showers, and aircon. Each has a private patio with views of the bush or the waterhole. There's a gratifying sense that the furniture is extremely well made, and that the rooms are immaculately clean.
You'll spend most of your time traversing this wilderness in a 4x4, because it's simply the best way to catch a wide range of wildlife going about their daily lives. All of the Big Five are present here, plus several other iconic African species – hippo, hyena, giraffe, zebra, baboon, impala, kudu, and some 470 bird species. Take a gentle walk to a rocky outcrop to enjoy the sounds and sense of this magical wilderness, free of distraction.
A lesser-known but expansive Big Five reserve in Greater Kruger with boundless adventure to be had.
