Sitting like a tossed handful of bright blocks, this colourful hilltop lodge occupies prime real estate in Uganda's highlands. Not only does it peer over a pristine forest to a high-altitude lake in the Virunga Mountains, it sits between two key sites for gorilla trekking: Mgahinga & Bwindi National Park. If that weren’t enough, its interesting architecture – a collection of vivid silo-shaped structures – and easy bonhomie means that it brims with charm. The 10 stunningly situated chalets are the ideal spot to return to after a day of rugged forest exploration. You won't be able to stop smiling.
From $240 person/night
An organic garden and a smattering of farm animals provision the kitchen with most of its needs. And the food is 10/10 – the mushroom soup is unbeatable (the chocolate mousse is seriously good too!).
Gorilla trekking and hikes are hard physical work, so the on-site spa is just what you need to ease all your muscular aches.
Due to its small number of chalets and popularity, it’s definitely worth booking as far in advance as possible. That goes for your gorilla trekking permit as well.
Perched on a clear hilltop but otherwise encircled by forest, Chameleon Hill's vivid exteriors certainly catch the eye. From the property, the views from nearly everywhere are as spectacular. The interiors are also bright, with artistic murals and mosaics on the walls, a restaurant with wide picture windows, and a broad veranda that juts out over the hillside. Two fireplaces help keep things cosy – in fact, the interior of the lodge is warm throughout, perfect for a between-activity read.
Ten chalets strung along the hillside in a playful palette are very private, with picture-perfect views. The interiors are custom decorated, and feature double or twin beds with comfortable mattresses and mosquito netting, en-suite bathrooms with all the amenities (including showers that may be the best in Uganda), a covered deck, and panoramic views across Lake Mutanda to the Virunga volcanoes. There are no in-room tea/coffee facilities, but your morning wake-up call comes with a hot beverage.
Uganda is one of just three countries where mountain gorillas can be seen, and it's arguably the best place offering best value. A permit for an all-day trek, available at 1500 USD/pp from Rushaga in Bwindi Impenetrable, allows visitors four hours with gorillas in a group of four people. The golden monkeys of Mgahinga National Park are another highlight, as are mountain-bike tours and village visits. Note that walks can be strenuous and require a good level of fitness.
