Perched on the tip of a dramatic gorge, Clifftop Exclusive Safari Hideaway overlooks the Sterkstroom River and the rugged bushveld of the 38,000-hectare, malaria-free Welgevonden Private Game Reserve. There are just eight private suites at the lodge, all designed in a style that combines glamour with eco-friendliness. The setting and facilities are first-class, as is the wildlife – see the Big Five, giraffes swaying up the cliffs in search of juicy leaves, rhino taking a mud bath, and plenty of birds. The cuisine is unsurpassable, the rim-flow pool a welcome sight after a hot safari, and atmosphere tranquil and relaxed.

Clifftop Lodge was much more than I hoped for. Our ranger was knowledgeable and interesting, we saw too many animals to name and feasted every night. We recommend a game walk – we were entranced by the small creatures and the vegetation.
Game viewing at the lodge is in open vehicles and offers travelers the opportunity of viewing the resident fauna and flora. The reserve is also a haven for birding enthusiasts, with its 280-odd species including the blue crane. Bush walks with a trained guide are also available. Night drives offer some of the best game viewing as the predators come out to hunt. At the lodge, guests can relax on their private viewing decks or in the sparkling plunge pools.
