Tucked amongst the towering trees, the heavenly COMO Shambala Retreat is not to be missed for those looking for a little inner (and outer!) rejuvenation.
Chef Tshering Lhaden at Bukhari Restaurant has a gifted hand and is as adept at producing traditional Bhutanese dishes, as he is handmade gnocchi - and you can guarantee it will all be served with signature flair.
Spectacular seclusion comes at a cost of time so be prepared for the five hour plus journey from the airport...
Renowned throughout the country and rumoured to be a favourite of the Bhutanese King himself, Bukhari Restaurant is the centrepiece of Uma Punakha. On warm nights, enjoy meals on the terrace or dine inside, accompanied by flickering wood-burning stoves. Don't forget a sundowner (or three) either - the cocktail menu is excellent. To unwind, venture to the COMO Shambala Retreat. Set in a glade below the hotel, there's a dreamy range of treatments on offer and even a Bhutanese hot stone bath to relax into. Bliss.
The eleven rooms and villas certainly don't disappoint. Modern, sleek and beautiful, each enjoys floor to ceiling windows and views over the spectacular valley (rooms downstairs have a small terrace; those upstairs don't). The spaces are bright and airy with contemporary sheesham-wood furniture, hand-knotted rugs, King size beds and plenty of luxe, cream linens to keep you warm. All have ensuite bathrooms. If you're looking for a little privacy, check out one of the two villas; each has a private butler and acres of space.
Whether you're a thrill seeker or just looking to relax, there's something for everyone in the Punakha Valley. For a jam-packed few days, take to the skies on a 90 minute heli-adventure over the mountainous kingdom, cruise the rapids of the Mo Chhu river on a white water rafting trip, or venture out onto the local hiking trails. If you're looking for a more tranquil escape, hole up in the spa and see how many treatments you can indulge in...
