Looking for a self-catering option in De Hoop Reserve? This pretty thatched sandstone cottage, lying just a short walk from the vlei and Melkkamer Manor House, is a charming option. Melkkamer Foreman's Cottage has three pretty bedrooms, an open-plan sitting and dining room, a fully equipped kitchen and those must-have barbecue facilities. It's a perfect family getaway, so gather the troops, pack a bag of provisions and head to this treasure on the southern Cape coast. Swap stories around the camp fire, sleep deeply and waken to a coastal wilderness that's just begging to be explored.
From $90 person/night
Whale watching. It may take a while before you get a sighting, so perch yourself on a dune and settle back with your travel mug and binos in hand. Seeing whales frolicking in the waters is well worth the wait!
There is nothing quite like cycling past a zebra, except perhaps coming across one of the reserve's herd on a hike...
A guided trail to Potberg to see the only remaining colony of endangered Cape vultures in the Western Cape. The sight of these raptors swooping from great heights is truly extraordinary, and getting some good pictures makes the hardship of carrying your camera worth the effort.
The Foreman's Cottage has a remote atmosphere, but it's just a short boat ride across the vlei from the main Opstal area, the central base of the reserve. (Driving there takes longer.) This is where it's all happening – come for breakfast, lunch or dinner at the delightful Fig Tree Restaurant. And if a day of exploring isn't on the tables (or you've worn yourself out), then a tennis court, a large swimming pool and a boules courtyard await!
There's a sense of a simpler era at this pretty cottage. If you're the first one in from unpacking the car, call shotgun on one of the three bedrooms (each clean and furnished with comfortable beds and crisp linen). Retreat to the lounge/dining area where you can sit in front of the roaring fire with a good book. And after your barbecue, wash the smell of smoke away in the outdoor shower beneath the stars or in the (indoor) tub.
From cycling and hiking to boat trips and whale watching from the dunes (plus some fine dining), this is ecotourism done right.
There's so much to see and do at De Hoop. Apart from cycling and hiking through the wilderness, on the alert for birds, whales and the reserve's 86 mammal species, a visit to the Cape vulture colony is a must. Drive through gorgeous fynbos fields until you reach Potberg, and once there take the roughly hour-long hike to the Vulture Deck to watch the great birds swoop and soar the skies. It's a lovely spot to enjoy your picnic lunch.
