From its slightly elevated perch, Satao Elerai enjoys an extraordinary perspective of Africa's tallest mountain; it also happens to be the closest camp to Mount Kili (though trekking embarks from elsewhere). North of the lodge, a 40-minute drive gets you to Amboseli National Park, whose plains and swamps host a huge array of wildlife, such as giraffe, zebra, and cheetah, and hundreds of bird species. Essentially, Satao Elerai is the real safari deal. This mid-sized camp oozes rustic charm and good hospitality, all within 2000-plus hectares of private conservation area and undisturbed tranquillity.
From $380 person/night
Satao is one of the closest camps to the King of African peaks, Mount Kilimanjaro, and the views are astonishing.
We know, safaris already mean an early wake-up but don't miss the sunrise, especially on a day when Mount Kilimanjaro is free of clouds.
Most game drives take place in the Amboseli reserve, which is around 40 minutes away.
The main area is cleverly built among giant boulders, creating a flow that winds sinuously from indoor to out, and back again. Cross a small bridge above a fish pond that's surrounded overhung by weavers' nests to enter the bar and split-level lounge/dining room. Wind out again to the rim-flow swimming pool, reception and terrace. Upstairs is an observation deck with plenty of comfortable seating. Dinners are à la carte, and on a clear night, may be served outdoors.
The camp currently has 12 luxury en-suite mountain-facing tents and five larger lodge-style suites, the latter with deep tubs as well as showers. All are elevated, and have superb interiors. (You know you're going to sleep well when the mattress is deep and the duvet defines snuggly.) Beyond sliding doors, your private veranda overlooks the plains and Amboseli National Park, and Kili's heights. Your bathroom-with-a-view is built of natural rock and acacia wood, and solar-powered hot running water is standard.
The area surrounding camp has a decent cross-section of wildlife, though density here is less that at neighbouring Amboseli. Still, you're likely to glimpse a good range of species – Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelle, zebra, eland, warthog, lion, leopard and giraffe (elephant, buffalo and wildebeest tend to be more migratory). However, the beauty of Satao Elerai is really its front-row view of Mount Kili (often covered in cloud, sadly). Game-watching at Amboseli is superb, with few visitors and incredible sightings.
Show all wildlife
The Amboseli and Chyulu Hills region enjoy a diverse landscape of open savannah, acacia thicket and riverine forest, characterised by sweeping views of Mount Kilimanjaro in the background. It's a place of extreme scenic beauty, with wildlife to match. Witness lions, buffalo, leopard, spotted hyena, cheetah, giraffe, warthog, a diverse range of antelope and more than 300 species of bird. However the true highlight is the magnificent herds of elephant containing the last of Africa's big Tuskers.
