An intimate hotel that combines bohemian quirkiness with African accents, Emily Moon River Lodge was built, the owners say, by seafarer Harry Mallard as a home for his beloved Emily Moon, who sadly never saw it. Whether the legend is true or not, this charming destination near Plettenberg Bay is well-known by locals and popular with visitors. The decor is rich and treasure-filled, with oriental lanterns and fabrics, Moorish-inspired arches, a wall topped with carved, long-necked giraffe heads and antelope horns on the walls. The scenery is splendid, with those fabulous Plett beaches and winding Bitou River.
From $120 person/night
The gorgeous location, totally removed from the hubbub of everyday life. Oh, and the fresh, super-stylish rooms, straight from the pages of an interiors magazine.
Take the canoes out for an afternoon paddle on the Bitou River. You'll float along the gentle, reed-lined waterway and and watch the waterbirds fluttering overhead.
Emily Moon is not directly on the central beach in Plettenberg Bay, but about 10 - 15 minutes drive away. It's a welcome retreat from the busier beachfront area, but take note if you want to stroll directly onto the sand.
Dining in the lodge's extravagantly decorated restaurant is an experience to remember, with the chef's home-style dishes including Karoo lamb, succulent pork belly and tomato and butter bean bredie. Enjoy your meal while gazing at the landscape and the rosy sunsets. Above the restaurant, Simon's Bar has a well-stocked bar and a pizza oven that's a real attraction (as is the Cuban-styled pulled pork pizza!). Seating areas with coffee-table books invite guests to settle down for some good holiday reading.
Unlike the bright main areas, the suites are tranquil havens in natural shades. There are 10 separate units of varying sizes. Each has a spacious living area, bathroom with underfloor heating, a fireplace, minibar, satellite TV and viewing deck. Suites 1 to 8 have river views; 9 and 10 have private gardens and treehouse viewing decks. Five minutes from the lodge is The River House, a self-catering unit with seven bedrooms and five bathrooms – perfect for families.
