About Gecko Nature Lodge

Well-priced, comfortable and remote island getaway.
Driving from Chake Chake you cross a varied landscape of deep green valleys and steep hillsides filled with villages separated by forests and spice plantations. A traditional muslim society, Pemba has retained a lot of it's unique and natural heritage because of the lack of mass tourism, with only a few accommodations options spread around the island. Be mindful and respectful of local customs as you make Gecko Nature Lodge a perfect budget base. It's for the young or the young at heart where you forgo the wifi connection (there is barely any) and surrender your self to the natural beauty.

Property details

The property

Designed to be communal and social this is an adventure lodge in every sense of the word. A simple pole and thatch open sided banda sits at the centre of the property, low key but setup to make the most of communal dinners with the ocean breeze. Cobblestone floors and a large dining table open out towards the decent sized swimming pool shaded by the surrounding palms. Facing the ocean is the perfect sunset terrace.

The rooms

Sandy pathways lead off to the 11 individual spacious bandas built from locally sourced materials.7 of the bandas are for singles or couples with large double beds with an additional day bed, lattice window panels allow the ocean breeze to provide natural ventilation. An outside toilet and shower is open in places to the elements so expect to sometimes share your shower with a lizard or a bush baby. 2 of the bandas are dormitory style for up to 6 people.

Activities

Diving is a huge attraction to Pemba, known for its coral gardens, wall, drift and night dives. With an on-site PADI centre you are very well taken care of. For non divers, there is fantastic snorkelling off the Misali Island, picnics to be had off the boats while visiting remote islands and kayaking along the edge of the mangrove forest. Walk through Ngezi forest or spot the myriad of bird species as you roam around the nearby villages.
