It's an easy three-hour drive from Johannesburg to the dramatic Waterberg region in the Limpopo region – home to Entabeni Private Game Reserve and its Honeyguide Conservation Lodge. The setting of this 22 000-hectare sanctuary can't be faulted – it's spectacular, with 600-metre-high cliffs separating a craggy high escarpment from a lower plateau. The wildlife? You'll find the Big Five, wonderful birdlife, and zero malaria mosquitoes. Entabeni's fenced borders and proximity to agricultural land may mean it's not the wildest destination in Africa, but it offers good game viewing and a perfect bush holiday within striking distance of bustling Joburg.
From $310 person/night
Entabeni's five ecosystems make for truly awesome scenery, ranging from large grassy plains to wetlands, wooded ravines and large mesas, buttes and rocky outcrops.
Seeing the Big Five is always a drawcard. Sightings of leopard are scarce, but there's a good chance you'll see endangered white rhino.
Soaking up the sunset from the top of the plateau makes for an on-top-of-the-world kind of feeling.
The main area is a tall thatched building with tiled floors and fine furnishings. The lounge and adjoining dining room have a comfortable, if rather formal, atmosphere. The well-stocked cellar certainly lightens the mood, with wine tastings, while an upstairs lounge makes for a quiet reading room. Most activity goes on outside though, with meals often served on the patio or in the garden, and a swimming pool with a spectacular view of the reserve.
Ten spacious suites are clustered on either side of the main area, remarkably private considering their proximity to each other. From each private veranda, large wooden doors lead directly into the thatched bedroom, with its romantic, netted bed and comfortable armchairs. There’s a sitting area with a fireplace, and an en-suite bathroom with a tub, shower and twin basins. All rooms have views of the camp's waterhole, the wetlands and plains, and the mountains beyond. You can feel yourself unwind...
Honeyguide Conservation Lodge occupies a superb position in the gorgeous Entabeni Reserve. It's a good option for anyone longing for an easy weekend's Big Five game viewing.
Highlights here are the morning and afternoon game drives in open vehicles. You stand a good chance of seeing the Big Five, giraffe and an unusual diversity of antelope (Entabeni has 55 mammal and 380 bird species). Explore on foot with a guide. At extra cost, and in coordination with other lodges, spa treatments, horse riding and boating are also options. Splash out on a helicopter flip or hot-air balloon ride across the bush. There's a golf course nearby.
