About Hotel Du Louvre

Madagascar's capital, Antananarivo (or "Tana") is a bustling city through which most travellers pass briefly on their way to the country's wildernesses. But its varied history and geographic layout of hills and lakes give Tana its own charm, if you're willing to explore a little. One gem is the boldly named Le Louvre Hotel, which may not quite live up to the standard of the most famous museum in the world, but nevertheless is charming. Designed by legendary Gustave Eiffel in the early 1900s and converted into a hotel in 1998, the five-storey building was fully renovated in 2009.

The property

Accommodating 100-plus guests, the common areas are on the large side, yet somehow not short on personality, thanks in part to the original art in the reception, lounge and dining areas. The small bar has a few good beers on tap, the dining room's huge windows overlook a lush herbarium (inspect the exposed, Eiffel-designed steel beams on the ceiling), and there's a generous breakfast buffet. Enjoy the spa, gym, and indoor pool, and should you need one, the conference centre.

The rooms

Seventy-eight rooms spread across five floors, and all are on the luxurious side, if a bit small (this is, after all, a three-star hotel). Aircon, TVs and minibars are standard, and some also have balconies with decent views over the city. They're thoughtfully decorated with local art, photos of Paris and posters from Air France and Air Madagascar. The decor is modern and neutral, but the rooms are comfortable, clean and tidy, with en-suite bathrooms offering baths and/or showers.

Activities

The hotel is perfectly situated for business travellers, with Avenue de l'Indépendence just across the road. If you've a few hours or a couple of days to linger, check out some of Tana's landmarks. Just around the corner is the Monument de l'Ange Noir. Don't miss the interesting Musée Andafiavaratra, once the Prime Minister's residence; the attractive yet politically fraught Ambohitsorohitra Palace; and the striking Andohalo Cathedral. Head to the colours and smells of Andravoahangy market for gifts and mementos.
