A historic and spiritual heartland, Kyoto invites you into a world of ancient crafts, ornate temples and the age-old Geisha tradition. Sitting on a major road in the centre of Kyoto, the Kanra Hotel is an oasis of calm, entered via a hallway lined with bamboo. This subtly chic aesthetic is woven throughout Kanra, from the serene spa to the minimalist rooms, which welcome you with a beautiful, lantern-lit entrance. Thanks to its fabulous location, you'll have no trouble exploring Kyoto from the hotel, including the ancient craft district, the flavours of Nishiki Market, and the city's many stunning temples.
From $110 person/night
The rooms are sanctuaries from the buzz of the city and there's nothing like a soak in your deep bathtub after a day out.
Definitely opt for the Japanese kaiseki-style breakfast - you won't regret it!
The hotel isn't in a particularly pretty area but it's an easy price to pay for being so central.
The Kanra has mastered the amalgamation of old and new with a style that harnesses the charms of a ryokan while embracing Japan's modern side. Tuck into tasty Italian cuisine at the Kanra Kitchen or enjoy delicious teppanyaki-style dining at HANAROKU; both use the freshest of locally-sourced ingredients. If you fancy a coffee or a cocktail, the relaxed cafe offers both, as well as a selection of handmade items from across Japan. When you're in need of a pamper, head straight to the spa.
Built in the traditional Machiya style, the rooms feature neutral shades, bamboo detailing and sliding shoji windows. At their centre, each has a futon platform with a shade for added privacy, as well as a low-set seating area with a TV (this can also double as additional sleeping space). The bathrooms are sleek with mosaic tiles, a large shower and cypress tub. Floral artwork, traditional crafts from Kyoto and a silk kimono hanging in the closet add the finishing touches.
Across the city, there are hundreds of beautiful temples to visit, as well as 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. If you plan on exploring close by, rent a bicycle and cruise the streets on two wheels, or catch a train at Gojo Station (it's just 5 minutes away). Highlights include getting to know the city's history at the Kyoto National Museum, visiting the KYOCERA Museum of Art and delving into Kyoto's traditional crafts in the Teramachi Art District. Then, explore Gion, the iconic Geisha neighbourhood, or shop until you drop on bustling Shijo Street.
