The very first city to be made a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Quito has a fascinating history that bleeds into every building and cobblestoned street. Built in the artists neighbourhood of San Marcos, ILLA is no exception. With its roots as a 17th-century family home, the hotel permeates a sense of warmth and hospitality while its decor is chic, modern and bold. With just 10 rooms, it's an intimate, boutique space with scene-stealing oil paintings, signature amenities (more on that later) and lovely views over the city. Set out to discover the delights of Quito, from its grand, aged plazas to the tiny stores selling Panama hats - did you know they happen to originate in Ecuador?
From $250 person/night
The perfect medley of old and new, authentic and fashionable - and the Ecuadorian hot chocolates, served daily!
The ILLA team is a hub of knowledge about the city and its history, so don't be shy to ask...
The lower floor rooms don't have as good a view, but you'll have plenty of time and opportunity to see this historic city.
Down a pleasant street in San Marcos, behind an exterior of white bricks and heavy wooden doors, the ILLA enjoys stylish, contemporary interiors. Look out from the glass-walled corridors to the central atrium with its tranquil reflecting pool and greenery in every direction. In the restaurant, the chefs serve a variety of cuisine, inspired by traditional Ecuadorian dishes with their own flair. For an extra memorable dinner, book the 13-course tasting menu! Nearing sunset, head to the rooftop for a drink with a view.
Themed after Ecuador's historical eras, ranging from Colonial to Republican, each room is elegant and plush. The rooms and suites are decked with all the comforts including heated floors, marble bathrooms with huge tubs, and state-of-the-art beds with robin's-egg blue and cream throws. Walls are adorned with sleek artworks and sitting areas are furnished with armchairs crafted by local artisans. Depending on the floor, you'll enjoy a view of lively Junin Street or El Panecillo, the city's most iconic landmark.
The more you explore, the more you discover true Quito. Stroll through Old Town, honoured as one of the most well-preserved historic centres in the Americas and learn all about the city's earliest inhabitants as well as the more contemporary art and architecture in the collection of museums, churches and plazas. Peruse markets that sell everything from chocolates to clothing and sample the snacks Quitenos have enjoyed for generations. Then, back at the hotel, the spa will gladly offer you a massage for tired tootsies.
