The Isalo Ranch is an excellent base from which to explore the wonders of Isalo National Park in Madagascar. The red clay and thatch bungalows and main area with restaurant, bar and swimming pool, are like a little village in the middle of the desert and views of the dramatic Isalo massif and surrounding savannah are stupendous. Friendly staff members are on hand to arrange a range of trekking, cycling and 4x4 trips in the nearby national park. And after a busy day of exploring, there's nothing better than coming back to the ranch for a home cooked meal and those views...
From $40 person/night
The ranch is the gateway to the national park so hiking, cycling and 4x4 trips through the jagged canyons of Isalo are quick and easy to embark upon.
Compared to other lodges in the area, Isalo Ranch offers excellent value for money and also welcomes guests who come equipped with tents to camp on the hotel grounds.
At the end of the day, watch the sunset from the comfort of your private terrace or wander among indigenous flora found right outside your bungalow.
The restaurant and large outdoor terrace forms the heart of Isalo Ranch. Both overlook a large swimming pool, and those breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and rock formations. Built in traditional Malagasy style, the restaurant offers a choice of local and international dishes, and often plays host to performances by local dancers and musicians. Surrounded by indigenous gardens, the ranch really is an oasis in the heart of the desert.
Isalo has twenty bungalows, each located in a tranquil forested area and painted in terracotta tones and finished with traditional thatched roofs. Interiors are simple but adequate, and characterised by colourful fabrics and art works by local artists. All come with bathtubs, hot water, mosquito nets and private terraces, and are powered by solar power. WiFI is available at the reception area.
It's the views from Isalo Ranch that take your breath away. Few things beat sitting on the terrace of your bungalow and watching the sun rise over Isalo's otherwordly rock formations.
The main attraction in the area is Isalo National Park, a granite massif with beautiful landscapes and a good population of lemur species, including Verraux’s sifakas, brown and ring-tail lemurs. Hikes to the beautiful natural pools can also be arranged - remember your swimmers! - as can cycling or 4x4 trips, and guided tours through the canyons to the lemurs and chameleons. 80km south of Isalo Ranch is the Zobitse Vohibasia National Park, which is a dry forest filled with baobabs, orchids, lemurs and endemic bird species.
