Jardim Dos Aloes is a charming family-run bed and breakfast in the historic old town on Mozambique Island, a Unesco World Heritage Site off the northern coast of mainland Mozambique. The atmosphere is ancient and colonial, emphasised by the number of old stone fortresses, chapels and historic monuments that dot the island in various states of disrepair. Jardim Dos Aloes' cosmopolitan owners have restored one of these crumbling ruins into a family residence and guesthouse that captures the essence of easy-going island living. The result is a very comfortable and intimate hideaway that makes you feel right at home.
From $110 person/night
Taking a guided bicycle tour around the island, or heading out to sea on the family yacht.
Shopping for unique craftwork, colourful locally made clothing and delicious street food in town, and stocking up on home-made aloe products from the beautiful gardens.
Relaxing on the rooftop terrace after a busy day exploring the island, soaking up the fabulous views across the lower part of town and the Indian Ocean beyond.
The guesthouse is part of the family's handsomely restored home, set within a beautiful aloe garden after which it is named. Sheltering beneath shady almond trees is a lovely courtyard patio, and there's a fabulous roof-top terrace overlooking the town and the sea. Breakfast is served in the courtyard or on the roof, and there are some great restaurants nearby for lunch and dinner. Relax in the comfortable patio lounge or plunge into the swimming pool secluded among the aloes.
The comfortable accommodation consists of a double en-suite bedroom and a larger suite which share a balcony, and an apartment with a fully equipped kitchenette, a first-floor bedroom and a double sleeper couch – great for families. The apartment also has its own lounge and a private balcony with a hammock. Interiors throughout are simple and uncluttered, with quirky vintage artefacts collected over the years, and plenty of space. All have mosquito nets and air conditioning.
The owners are exceptional hosts and their charming house is a real gem. Expect incredible food and characterful accommodation ideally located for exploring the island.
A highlight here is that the guesthouse has its own yacht, which opens up a world of possibilities for exploring the waters around the island and further afield. Snorkelling and fishing trips are offered, with longer cruises to the surrounding islands and mainland Mozambique. The town itself is fascinating – guided bicycle tours are a great way to get a feel of the island, with its historic monuments, lively street markets, and restaurants and bars within easy reach.
