Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve is a unique piece of wilderness in South Africa’s Cederberg region. The arid landscape has an other-worldly quality, with bizarre rock formations, rugged mountains and open plains dotted with fynbos and succulents. And it's this dramatic landscape, that was once home to the San Bushmen, that Kagga Kamma Lodge draws its inspiration, from the traditional African-style Huts, the unusual Cave Suites built into the sandstone rock overhangs, and the fabulous open-air Outcrop and Star Suites. There’s plenty to do on the reserve, and this is a great choice for those who enjoy nature and outdoor activities.
From $220 person/night
Spending the night under the skies on a private star platform, completely open to the wilderness. Did someone say honeymoon?
Visit outside of the blistering summer months and enjoy long hikes across the landscape, discovering forgotten paintings and enjoying the breeze in your hair.
The cave rooms are fabulously fun (and not many can say they’ve slept in a real-life cave!) but elements of the décor are starting to look a little outdated.
Set amongst the rock formations, the stone and timber restaurant and bar is under thatch and filled with beautiful, wildlife-inspired art. During the day, two swimming pools offer a welcome escape from the blistering Karoo heat, and a peaceful spot to relax and enjoy the scenery. At night, the traditional boma is a cosy spot for dinner. There's WiFi and satellite television (if you want to remain connected to the outside world) and a small wellness spa (if you don't!).
Accommodation ranges from comfortable thatched huts, to unusual Cave Suites, skilfully chiselled into the sandstone overhangs. Our favourites include the wonderful Outcrop Room, an open-air creation set amongst the rocks with no walls or ceilings, and the romantic Star Suite, a private platform about three kilometres from the lodge, completely open to the wilderness, with a natural rock pool and a glorious "star bath".
A network of hiking and mountain bike trails criss-cross the reserve, and there's a variety of rock climbing and bouldering opportunities in the sandstone outcrops. Explore your surroundings on nature drives and quad bike safaris to search for a variety of antelope, unusual species like aardvark, and the rarely seen Cape mountain leopard, or visit ancient San rock art for an insight into the region’s history. A small observatory offers a closer look at the fantastic night skies, and spa treatments are available.
Truly amazing place. The open air star suite is a must.
