Adopted from a Sanskrit term, Kamandalu provides a place to escape real life. Located in the lush highlands of Ubud where a breeze ruffles the rice field shoots and coconut palms, and the tranquil Petanu River flows, the resort emulates a traditional Balinese village and combines authenticity with all the contemporary trimmings that make for a delightful stay. There are multiple, spoiling spa options and one of the largest pools in Ubud for soaking up the sensational views while you swim. When you feel like venturing out, there are plenty of trekking routes in the surrounding countryside.
Surrounded by emerald rice terraces, Kamandalu was built to respect its surroundings and characterised by natural stone finishes and grass rooftops. The resort has a number of dining options: try Alun-Alun for romantic dinners, Petulu for authentic Indonesian cuisine, or the Awana Lounge for a healthy menu of seasonal fruits and veggies grown in the highlands. There are multiple pools to choose from (including one with a swim-up bar) as well as two spas, the Chaya private villa and Forest Spa.
Scattered amongst the greenery, the villas enjoy ethereal views of Ubud's valley and river below. Each has a unique character, but all are warm and bright with netted four-poster beds, authentically-styled furnishings, and bathrooms with either a standing terrazzo or huge sunken tub. Most villas have a private terrace and hand-crafted daybed, while some enjoy their own pool. At certain villas, you can also enjoy a private dinner or BBQ in the garden.
Get to know the artistic scene in Ubud by visiting local artisans, museums and the Ubud Art Market. You can also delve into the culture of the region on a visit to one of the many temples and watch a traditional dance. In the surrounding countryside, there are a number of trekking routes including the famous Campuhan Ridge Walk, as well as meandering cycle routes among the Tegallalang Rice Terraces. The fascinating Ubud Monkey Forest is also worth a visit, where you'll walk amongst hundreds of Balinese long-tailed monkeys.
Kamandalu offers delightful dining experiences like an afternoon tea of traditional Indonesian delicacies amongst the rice paddies, or a Balinese royal dinner.
There is a complimentary shuttle service between 10am and 9pm into central Ubud each day.
If you're travelling as a family, the resort offers two- and three-bedroom villas, as well as a very handy babysitting service.
