Kanzi House is a thatched villa in a private conservancy at the foot of the Chyulu Hills in south-east Kenya, with views across the plains of Amboseli to Mt Kilimanjaro. Although the surrounding areas are some of the most famous in East Africa, these green hills receive relatively few visitors. This means you'll have the wilderness pretty much to yourself – apart, that is, from the local Masai, whose people have occupied this land for generations. There's a close partnership between the community and the conservancy, which transfers a significant portion of its income to the Masai Wilderness Conservation Trust.
From $1,360 person/night
Dining on exquisite Italian cuisine (owner Luca is of Italian descent) with an African twist indoors, beside the pool beneath the stars or in the open dining area of the cottage.
The skills of the Masai trackers really shine on a walking safari. After all, this is a Masai heartland.
Enjoying the experience of the thatched, stone-walled villa, with all mod cons and views of beloved Kili. Your personal staff include a private chef and guide, so you can see the sights as and when you wish.
Luxury meets rustic at this thatched villa, with its polished concrete floors and stone walls decorated with beautiful woven rugs. Large windows frame those endless views – dreamy! There's a cosy lounge with plush armchairs and sofas arranged for friendly gatherings, and a dining room with a long wooden table and canvas chairs. Outside, a covered veranda is both for wildlife viewing and dinners, and a few steps away is an 18-metre swimming pool. There's a Jacuzzi too.
The three double rooms, including the pool cottage, plus two twin rooms, sleep up to 10 guests. The rooms vary in size and style – some are clearly more suited to children than others. Stone walls and thatch keep the spaces nice and cool, however, and mosquito nets mean you can sleep in peace. All have en-suite bathrooms, some with baths, others with showers. The pool cottage is the most spacious, with large wooden cupboards and a writing desk.
Head guide Samson Parashina has a stellar CV, and is very amusing to boot. Note: Visit during the Nov/June green season for the best wildlife.
Activities focus less on all-out game viewing than most camps in East Africa. Not to say that there isn't wildlife to see – the surrounding plains are home to elephant, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and several antelope species. All the big predators are present too, but can be elusive. Day trips to the parks can be organised, but we'd rather explore the forested Chyulu Hills and the surrounding savanna on foot, with expert guides. Horseback safaris are available for experienced riders.
Show all wildlife
The Amboseli and Chyulu Hills region enjoy a diverse landscape of open savannah, acacia thicket and riverine forest, characterised by sweeping views of Mount Kilimanjaro in the background. It's a place of extreme scenic beauty, with wildlife to match. Witness lions, buffalo, leopard, spotted hyena, cheetah, giraffe, warthog, a diverse range of antelope and more than 300 species of bird. However the true highlight is the magnificent herds of elephant containing the last of Africa's big Tuskers.
