Kapama Private Game Reserve is a 13,000-hectare sweep of savanna and riverine forest in the western reaches of the greater Kruger area. This is Big Five country, with plenty of other creatures to boot and 350-plus bird species. Southern Camp is the latest addition to Kapama's accommodation, and it's an exciting destination for couples, families and solo travellers. Take twice-daily game drives – there's always plenty to see, so have your binoculars/camera at hand – and a spa, pool, and wide beds to snooze in before teatime. This is a great camp for people wanting a more personal experience.

Dining in the boma, beneath a thousand stars, is a memorable and incredibly romantic experience.
Take advantage of niche activities including hot air ballooning, visiting an endangered species centre, or sleeping under the stars.
The spa is a delight after a morning drive, but plan ahead because it's located at a nearby hotel.
Breakfast and lunch are served in the thatched, open-sided dining room overlooking the bush. Beside it, the lounge area has comfy couches that are perfect for settling back and taking in the scenery. There's a good wine cellar stocked with bottles from some of South Africa's top estates. If the weather's favourable, dinner may be prepared on an open fire, safari style, and enjoyed in the traditional outdoor boma, with the flames and the stars as lighting.
The camp offers something for everyone in its standard suites, luxury suites and family suite – 15 rooms in total. All are spacious and luxurious, while still possessing a quintessential camping-in-the-bush feel. There's aircon, insect screens (mosquitoes can be a problem), en-suite bathrooms and a private deck, perfect for gazing at the rugged scenery. Three family units include a luxury suite with a lap pool and separate, adjoining children's room.

Whether you're the avid adventurer, always up for action, or the quiet traveller who's simply craving hard-earned rest and relaxation, Kapama Southern Camp has you sorted. Travel into the wild by vehicle or on foot with the excellent ranger and tracking teams for some spectacular game sightings. For a fee, take a hot-air balloon ride, interact with elephants, visit the nearby Hoedspruit Centre for Endangered Species or, for the romantic but brave, sleep out beneath the stars.
Fantastic safari experience. Sufiso, our guide, was phenomenal. The food was excellent. Service overall was great. The rooms were nice, but nothing too special. If guests are keen to be near the gym, they should stay at Karula Camp.
Clean, spacious accommodations with very friendly and attentive staff. It was particular nice to only have six people on the game drives so that the small group can easily determine what animals to try and find next.
