While currently closed for renovations, Kaza Safari Lodge lies on beautiful Impalila Island, on the Namibian side of the Zambezi River. Formerly known as Impalila Island Lodge, this rustic getaway is accessible by boat transfer from the Botswana side, which makes getting there part of the adventure. The focus is naturally on the river, which draws a constant stream of animals, and nearby Chobe National Park, renowned for its huge herds of elephant. Listen to the water rushing past from your thatch and timber chalets (one of eight), and watch the passing wildlife parade from the lovely central area built around ancient baobab trees.
From $360 person/night
The lodge's location in the game-rich zone where Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe meet means that boat cruises and island walks offer terrific wildlife sightings. The waterway is great for flyfishing and the chance to land legendary tigerfish.
This is a birding hotspot. The combination of riverine vegetation and pristine island bushveld draws a number of sought-after specials, including Pel’s fishing-owl and Schalow’s turaco.
In the centre of Impalila Island is a magnificent baobab tree, estimated to be about two thousand years old. Bush walks followed by a wild picnic beneath this ancient landmark are great extra touches, and rather fun.
Facing the river, the thatched main area has been built on a sturdy timber deck that curves around a pair of ancient baobab trees. The bar/lounge area has open sides overlooking the swimming pool, which drops down to a narrow strip of grassy riverbank and the jetty. Most meals are served on the outside pool terrace, with superb views of the Zambezi River. Check your day's sightings in the well-stocked reference library and visit the curio shop for memories.
Sandy paths lead from the main area to eight en-suite thatched wooden chalets set beneath a canopy of riverine trees, slightly back from the water’s edge. Each has a private outside viewing deck overlooking the Zambezi rapids, and the wild interior of Impalila Island at the back. Interiors are classic bush style – exposed thatch and rich timber, with creamy drapes of mosquito netting covering the comfortable twin or double beds, and ceiling fans for the intense summer heat.
This charming lodge occupies a beautiful position on the river. Enjoy the water-based sightseeing – it offers sightings unlike those seen on a land-based safari.
Take a motorised boat cruise along the Zambezi and Chobe's labyrinth of waterways and floodplains for frequent sightings of huge herds of elephant, buffalo, pods of hippo, and crocodiles. Lions are regular visitors to the water's edge, and the birding is excellent. Keen fishermen will enjoy an expedition with a specialised guide. Later, stretch your legs on an island bush walk to discover the intriguing smaller wildlife species in this ecologically diverse region.
