Deep in the belly of the Great Rift Valley, where soaring peaks clash with great expanses of desert barely touched by man, Koros is the picture of rugged adventure. Emerge from your tent to gaze over acres of scrub and forested outcrops, and contemplate your next outing to the Jade Sea (Lake Turkana) where thrashing crocodiles thrill, and you may well tread the same ground as early man. Although Koros is most definitely in-tune with its surroundings, the camp hasn't lost its homely touches: tuck into pizza on blankets laid under the stars whilst listening to the stories of the Samburu, before falling soundly asleep in your downy bed.
From $310 person/night
Getting to know Kenya in its most natural form, without losing an ounce of quality.
Many of the Koros team are from the Samburu tribe, so don't miss out on their epic stories - there are many!
The land where Koros Camp sits isn't teeming with wildlife, but leopards have been known to stop for a drink at the waterhole after dark.
Designed with the look of a make-shift shelter, the main area is open-air with stone banquettes and simple table settings where succulent curries and smoked kebabs are shared over stories from the day. In the mornings, enjoy fruit platters, muesli mugs and a Full English on the veranda. To cool down after an exploration of Kenya's wilds, enjoy the freeform pool carved into the rockface. The after-dinner entertainment is as good as any live show - gazing at the star-speckled indigo sky from cushions spread out on the ground.
There are only five tents at Koros, all with large, wrought-iron beds, canvas wardrobes, and sitting areas for appreciating the views. Three tents have outdoor showers and flush toilets with slated walls, while the other two are slightly smaller with shared loos - these are ideal for families or larger groups. Koros Camp is all about getting your safari back to basics, and we definitely aren't complaining.
Travel by 4x4 to the shores of Lake Turkana, a permanent lake desert and one of the most active breeding grounds for Kenya's crocodiles. Should you be an avid birder, the lake is alive with plumage of every colour! Ascend the rocky valley escarpments to find ancient rock art and take in the vistas from 'Old Man's Beard', watch as lines of camel make their way over the hills, and get to know the deep history of the Samburu people on a guided walk.
