About Kunene River Camp

Camping at the end of the world.
Kunene River Camp is accessible through the Schoeman’s company, Skeleton Coast Safaris. The last of the Skeleton Coast's collection of fly-in camps, Kunene is a truly remote, truly rustic bush camp, in a gloriously isolated setting on the banks of the Kunene River. This impressive perennial waterway forms a natural border between the arid rocky reaches of northern Namibia, and the south of Angola on the far side. The only way to reach this camp is by air, followed by a long scenic drive in a 4x4 through the towering mountains, gravel plains and open desert landscapes. Activities focus on the river itself, the abundant birdlife, and the fascinating but sadly dwindling nomadic Himba settlements

Property details

The property

The entire camp is constructed from local stone, wood and reeds, and cleverly designed to blend into the dramatic boulder-strewn riverbank. The open-sided bar and dining deck sits in a prime position down near the water on a suspended platform perfect for birdwatching, with the backdrop of the river flowing past and Angola on the far banks. Buffet-style breakfasts and lunches are served on the deck, with dinners cooked over an open fire under the stars.

The rooms

Kunene Camp has just four simple dome tents high up on the river bank, sheltered from the elements by a rustic reed enclosure and roof. Each has proper twin beds with comfortable mattresses and linen, a bedside table with a battery-powered lamp, a chemical toilet, and an enclosed outdoor bucket shower with hot water on request. In front of the tents is a small private terrace with seats and a stone table, and stunning views of the surrounding scenery.

Activities

Boat trips along the Kunene River offer the chance to view wildlife along its banks, with crocodiles frequently spotted sunning themselves on the sand bars in the shallows. Further upstream past gentle rapids are fascinating rock formations, and the birdlife is prolific all the way – this is one of Namibia’s birding hotspots. Guided nature drives into the surrounding desert landscapes provide an opportunity to visit nomadic Himba communities and learn a little about their traditional way of life.
